Why our sleep experts loved it
The Harrison Spinks Ely Ortho 2750 is a quality British-made mattress with an emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly materials. It benefits from the farm-to-bedroom manufacturing process and spring system that Harrison Spinks have built their reputation on over the decades. Overall it is a very firm mattress across the board but it also manages to avoid feeling stiff and unbreathable due to the combination of materials used. When you look at the price tag relative to the materials, design, and craftsmanship that has gone into it, it really is exceptional value for money and one of the best mattresses in its firmness class that you can buy from one of the most reputable British brands.
Design & First Impressions
The Ely Ortho 2750 is an extremely high-quality product from the moment you unbox it. It has a solid heft to it with a depth of 27cm and that solid ‘built-to-last’ quality in the construction. The Belgian damask cover has a lovely feel to it that is very soft and supple yet durable and breathable at the same time. The hand-tufting is a beautiful traditional touch and, alongside the double rows of hand side-stitching, help to maintain an even distribution of the fillings in the mattress over time. It feels like every stitch is there for a purpose and not just aesthetic touches. The natural colour scheme and elegant but simple detailing further enforce that traditional British style that we have come to expect from Harrison Spinks products.
Putting it onto the bed, it already has a solid and professional feel. It also oozes a sense of quality craftsmanship which immediately sets it apart from the cheaper, mass-produced alternatives. It is obvious this is a mattress that is built to last.
Construction & Materials
Like all Harrison Spinks mattresses, the Ely Ortho 2750 begins life on their very own 300-acre Yorkshire farm, which is where the majority of the mattress materials are sourced. Layers of British wool, cotton, hemp, and Ecotex® fibres make for an exceptionally breathable and comfortable sleep surface. They also work together to provide natural temperature regulation – wool for insulation and moisture wicking, cotton for added breathability, and hemp for durability and freshness. The end result is a surface that remains naturally cool and dry, while also being hypoallergenic and hygienic.
Beneath the natural layers is a sophisticated dual spring system. The main support comes from the Harrison Spinks original Cortec™ Pocket Springs, which are now manufactured without glue, further improving airflow and recyclability. They offer quick response to movement for targeted support, which also adjusts dynamically as you move around. In conjunction with these are the Micro posture springs – small, responsive coils which contour dynamically like foam, without the dip or sink in sensation that memory foam suffers from. This combination offers orthopaedic support with sufficient responsiveness to avoid the feeling of flat or lifeless.
Firmness & Feel
The Ely Ortho 2750 is as firm as they come. It is a particularly good mattress for back and stomach sleepers who need or want a lot of support. This will keep your spine aligned and hips raised, reducing lower back tension. The upper natural fillings have just enough cushioning to provide some pressure relief without being unstructured or softening the support.
Motion transfer is impressive. The dual-spring system absorbs movement from one side of the mattress to the other incredibly well. There is also a good amount of edge stability here – the mattress does not sag inwards at the edges as much as many other models, which extends the surface area of the bed. Overall, the Ely Ortho 2750 feels like a firm but very controlled experience, structured yet responsive and supportive but without becoming uncomfortable.
Temperature Regulation
Temperature is where the Ely Ortho 2750 really shines. The natural fibres, especially wool and hemp, act as an effective climate control system, trapping or releasing heat as required. The airflow created by the Ecotex® layers and open spring design also keeps the interior feeling cool and dry. It is a very good mattress for those who are prone to overheating and will maintain a good, steady temperature throughout the night, superior to many synthetic-fibre competitors.
Performance & Support
Performance-wise, the spring system of Cortec™ and Micro posture springs is the key. They move independently of each other, offering pinpoint pressure point targeting whilst distributing weight across the surface evenly. There is a real orthopaedic integrity to the feel – it does not just feel firm but has been designed deliberately to enhance spinal alignment. Added to this, the resilience of the springs and natural fibres suggests excellent longevity, without the sagging that can occur in lower-quality models over time.
A further advantage of this model is the single-sided design. While it does not need to be flipped, rotating it regularly will help prolong the usable life. The built-in handles are very solid and make rotation much simpler – a small but useful design feature.
Everyday Use
Day-to-day, the Ely Ortho 2750 feels very consistent and steady. It has good support where it matters, is comfortable from day one and works equally well for couples or individuals. It is also hypoallergenic and suitable for allergy sufferers, while the natural, chemical-free build is another big selling point for those wanting an eco-conscious product. This mattress is also surprisingly quiet with little to no creaking or bounce, just solid, silent support all night.
Who It Suits
The Ely Ortho 2750 is great for back or stomach sleepers, or anyone looking for a firm, orthopaedic grade support with natural materials. It is also for those who appreciate craftsmanship, British manufacturing, and eco-friendly design – it is a particularly strong contender if those are your priorities. It is also a good investment for buyers looking for long-term durability – the sort of mattress you will not have to replace or change often due to sagging or loss of comfort.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
Side sleepers or those who prefer a softer and more cushioned feel will struggle with the Ely Ortho 2750. It is simply too firm for comfort for these sleeping positions or those used to memory foam mattresses. If you prefer the slow sink and deep contour of memory foam, the more responsive yet structured feel of this spring-based mattress may not be to your liking. However, for a mattress in its firmness class, it is an excellent compromise between support and breathability.
Verdict
The Harrison Spinks Ely Ortho 2750 Mattress is an excellent example of sustainable luxury at its best. It is firm, supportive, and built with natural materials that add to the comfort and longevity. The Cortec™ and Micro posture spring system is well-designed and offers genuine orthopaedic benefits, without losing that responsiveness. The breathable wool and cotton layers are also great for all-season comfort. It feels like a much higher-end product than it should be in its price bracket and it offers fantastic value for money in its firmness category. We confidently recommend it as one of the better options for those who want that structured support and handmade British quality that will last the test of time.
