The Orion Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame does two jobs well for a small bedroom: a padded headboard you can sit against and 22cm of storage under the mattress. It opens from the side, so it wants clear floor down one side of the bed. Skip it if the room only lets you walk round the foot end.
Storage and a headboard worth leaning on
The headboard is the Orion's tall, flat padded panel, made for sitting up against, the same as on the plain Orion frame. Underneath, a side-opening ottoman with an internal depth of 22cm and sprung wooden slats on the lifting part. It's woven fabric throughout and weighs 56kg flat-packed, so plan on two people for the build.
For a box room or a first flat this is the combination I'd go for: somewhere for the spare bedding that isn't the wardrobe floor, and a headboard that turns the bed into the comfiest seat in the room. Under-bed boxes are where things go to be forgotten, while an ottoman you lift once a week is storage you'll use.
The one ottoman here you can also sit up in
Of Dreams' three side-opening ottomans, this is the one to read in. The tall padded headboard does for your back what the storage does for the room, and the sprung slats under the mattress add a little give. The padded panel is also the part that will mark first, so brush it every couple of weeks. The assembly guide recommends a mattress of 20 to 50kg on this ottoman in small double, double and king, so check the weight of yours first.1
What to buy instead
The Phoenix Upholstered Ottoman is plainer and the one I'd pick for a guest room, where nobody sits up for long. For a bed pushed against a wall, Dreams' Billy lifts from the foot end instead.
