Why our sleep experts loved it
I have been testing the Origin Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame with an Origin mattress, and overall I have been really impressed. The frame itself feels fantastic, solid and reassuringly sturdy, with a smart mid-century style that looks more expensive than it is. It did take me a bit longer to put together than I expected, so for me it is a strong 4 stars out of 5 rather than a perfect score, but once built it has been trouble-free.
At the time of writing, the Origin Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame is available in single, small double, double, king and super king sizes, with prices running from roughly £450 for a single up to around £700 for a super king in the current promotion. Origin also publishes a higher “Total Value” price range of £588 to £934 and compares this model with upholstered beds from brands like Simba and Tempur, which underlines the value proposition if you are shopping around in the mid to upper mid-range market.
Design & build
The Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame sits in that sweet spot between modern and timeless. The silhouette is clean and unfussy, but the splayed, mid-century style legs give it a bit of personality. In my bedroom it reads as quietly premium rather than flashy, which is exactly what many people want from an upholstered frame.
The base structure is built from solid Canadian timber, topped with an upholstered surround and padded headboard. The combination of a hardwood frame and fabric makes it feel both robust and soft-edged at the same time. The side rails sit nice and flush, and once everything is tightened there is no wobble or rattle, even when you sit heavily on the edge of the bed.
The upholstery itself feels good quality for the price point. It is not the ultra-luxury, ultra-thick fabric you would see on a very high-end designer bed, but it has an even weave, a smooth hand feel and a neat finish around the seams. Importantly, the corners and headboard are padded rather than hard, which makes the whole frame feel softer and more inviting in real life than it looks in the product shots.
Origin has also designed this frame to pair visually with its mattresses, and in practice it works very well. My Origin mattress sits neatly within the frame, with enough of the mattress showing above the side rail to look plush, but not so much that the headboard feels lost behind it.
Assembly & setup
Although Origin describes its bed frames as straightforward to put together, I found the Luxe Upholstered took a bit longer than I had anticipated. This is not because anything is particularly complicated, more that there are quite a few components to bolt together and the frame itself has a bit of weight to it, which speaks to the solid construction.
Building it solo is possible, but I would strongly recommend having a second person on hand, especially for lifting the side rails into place and aligning the base. Working methodically, it is the sort of project I would allow an unhurried hour or so for, rather than expecting a super quick 20-minute build. In my case it was the extra faff of lining everything up precisely that pushed it into "took longer than I expected" territory, which is one of the reasons I would score it 4 stars rather than 5.
On the positive side, once everything is tightened properly, the pay-off is a frame that feels extremely stable. I have not had to re-tighten any fixings so far, and there have been no mysterious creaks developing over time.
Comfort & practicality
With any bed frame, a lot of the comfort experience is dictated by the mattress, but the base matters more than people often realise. The Origin Luxe Upholstered has a solid timber frame and a slatted base designed to support the mattress evenly. In everyday use that translates to a very stable, level sleeping surface with no sense of sagging or bowing in the middle.
What sets this frame apart from a basic wooden model is how soft it feels around the edges. The padded headboard is genuinely comfortable to sit against for reading or watching TV, especially paired with a couple of pillows. It has enough height to support your upper back without feeling towering in a standard UK bedroom, and because it is upholstered rather than bare wood, you do not get that cold, hard sensation between your shoulders on chilly evenings.
The corners and outer edges of the frame are also padded, which sounds like a small detail but makes a real difference in practice. If you have children charging around the room, or if you are simply prone to bumping your shins on the bed, those softer edges make the frame feel much more forgiving.
In terms of day-to-day noise, the combination of timber frame and well-secured base has been excellent. I have not noticed squeaks or creaks when turning over at night, which is something cheaper frames often struggle with after a few months.
Storage
This is not an ottoman or integrated-storage bed, so if you are after hidden storage drawers then one of Origin’s storage models will be a better fit. However, there is a useful amount of space underneath. According to Origin’s dimensions, the underside clearance is around 25 cm on all sizes, which is enough for low storage boxes, folded suitcases or under-bed bags.
The overall height from floor to the top of the side rail is about 43 cm, again consistent across sizes, which makes it easy to slide things in and out without everything being on display. In a smaller bedroom, that extra bit of storage flexibility is very welcome, even if it is not the main selling point of the frame.
Everyday use
Living with the Origin Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame has been refreshingly straightforward. Once the more involved assembly is out of the way, it simply does its job well. The frame feels rock-solid when you sit on the edge, there is no lateral wobble when two people are in bed, and the padded headboard makes the bed feel like a comfortable place to spend time, not just to sleep.
The upholstery has held up well so far. Light dust and lint come off easily with a quick vacuum or fabric brush, and occasional marks have been easy enough to spot-clean with a damp cloth. I would still be sensible about drinks in bed, but the fabric does not feel overly delicate or fragile.
It is also worth factoring in the overall purchase experience. Origin includes free delivery to your room of choice, a 14-night trial on the bed frame, and a 5-year warranty, which is generous for a frame at this price. There is the option to spread the cost with 0% finance via Klarna too, which will be helpful if you are buying a mattress at the same time and want to manage your budget.
In terms of value, Origin’s own comparison table shows this frame sitting significantly below the average price of comparable upholstered beds from big-name brands, which tallies with my own sense that you are getting a lot of design and build quality for the money.
Final verdict
Overall, the Origin Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame is a very easy product to recommend if you want a smart, well-made upholstered bed without paying designer-brand prices. The combination of solid Canadian timber frame and padded, fabric-wrapped surround gives it a reassuringly sturdy feel with a softer, more luxurious look than a bare wooden bed. It pairs brilliantly with the Origin mattress, which I use as my main mattress, and creates a cohesive, high-quality sleep setup.
It is not completely perfect. Assembly took longer than I had hoped, purely because of the number of parts and the weight of the frame, and I would say it is a two-person job if you want a calm, stress-free build. For that reason I would personally score it 4 out of 5 rather than a full 5. Once it is up, though, I have had no issues at all.
If you like the idea of a mid-century inspired upholstered bed with padded headboard and corners, want something solid and safe for a family home, and appreciate the backing of a proper warranty and trial period, the Origin Luxe Upholstered Bed Frame is very much worth considering. At its current price point it represents good value, particularly when you look at what similar upholstered frames from other big brands are charging, and in everyday use it simply feels like a quality piece of furniture that should last you for years.
