Sleep, they say, is the golden chain that ties our health and bodies together and at the core of a great night's sleep is the right mattress. The importance of this humble bedroom essential cannot be overstated. With soaring expectations of comfort, we look for a mattress that harmoniously ticks the boxes of our personal preferences and health needs. This one is the Komfi GelMed Comfort Mattress, a medium hybrid that puts a gel layer and cut foam over pocket springs.
How we assessed it
The Komfi GelMed Comfort Mattress is a 25cm hybrid: a top layer of castellated foam cut into grid-like sections, Komfi's TrueGel layer, 1000 pocket springs and a base of recycled Ecofoam, all under a micro-quilted cover. It is rated medium, which gives you a cushioned surface with springs working underneath it, so it's easier to turn over on than an all-foam mattress of the same depth. Foam cut into separate sections and springs in their own pockets both keep a partner's movement on their side of the bed. Heat is the part we'd watch. There is foam above and below those springs, and the gel and the gaps cut into the top layer are what is meant to keep it cool. It is single-sided and arrives rolled, so rotate it and don't try to flip it.
Design and features
The idea behind the Komfi GelMed Comfort Mattress resonates with the modern consumer's demand for a blend of tradition and innovation. This mattress parades features that provide comfort, adaptability, and durability. Encased in a sleek Microquilted cover, the mattress has a unique layering of Pocket Springs, TrueGel Technology, and Reflex foam. Komfi sells the TrueGel layer on drawing heat away from you. Gel is the cooling material I'm most inclined to believe in, as a mild benefit rather than a reason to buy. The reflex foam is the part I'd watch over the years, because cheaper reflex foam is what loses its shape first. Regardless, the Reflex Foam promises to mould to your body's contours, maintaining spine alignment and offering a sound sleep.
Mattress comfort
Rated medium, with castellated foam and a gel layer over 1000 pocket springs, it suits side sleepers better than back sleepers, who are better on something a notch firmer. Pocket springs under foam and gel make a comfortable bed, but I'd expect more than that at this price.
Suitability
At 25cm deep it takes standard fitted sheets.

The verdict
After a thorough assessment, our verdict on the Komfi GelMed Comfort Mattress is mixed. It is comfortable and it adapts to your shape. Our concerns are the price for what's inside and how the reflex foam holds up. Buy it if you sleep on your side; back sleepers and heavier sleepers should go firmer.
