Why our sleep experts loved it
The Felix Mid Sleeper Bed Frame aims to do what most parents secretly pray for when searching for a child's bed. Cleaning up their bedroom while still being stylish enough not to stick out in more mature rooms. On paper it offers smart storage, a sturdy build and considered safety features. After seeing it in the flesh and putting it together myself, it mostly hits the mark on practicality but does come with some annoyances during assembly.
Design & First Impressions
At first look the Felix seems modern and well designed. The all white finish gives it a clean and neutral aesthetic that will slot easily into most children's rooms. It's not showy or attention seeking, it has a minimalist and understated look that complements bright bedding or wall hangings nicely. The standout feature is the integrated shelving and drawers, they give the bottom half of the bed a mini storage station vibe. It's cleverly conceived rather than feeling like an afterthought. The slide out desk is another smart addition, and once closed it all looks neat and organised. Visually the design is sensible and cohesive, a few exposed fixings and stickers take away from its elegance though.
Assembly Experience
Full disclosure, the Felix is not a quick build. Instructions are clear and the number of panels, screws and fixings is off putting. Two adults are needed and it's still not a fast job, it requires patience and perseverance. Alignment of the pre-drilled holes is good, which helps with some of the fiddlier connections. I'd allow a full afternoon rather than trusting the optimistic quoted assembly time. But it's worth it in the end because it all feels solid and secure, with each piece slotting into place neatly. It's a build that requires effort, but is satisfying once you can stand back and admire it.
Build Quality & Materials
Sturdy is the overall impression after putting the Felix together. Panels lock together tightly and the ladder doesn't wobble when climbed. The cut out step handles are a good safety feature too, they make it easier for little fingers to hold on as they go up and down. Shelving and drawers are good and the runners feel fairly smooth. It's made from engineered wood with a melamine surface so is good for everyday wear but may show the odd scratch over time. Considering the price point, it's an ok overall build quality, it's not premium but is solid enough for a main bed.
Comfort & Stability
The bed feels stable and supportive with a mattress in place. No creaking or movement when getting in or climbing the steps. The mattress height is good within the safety rails, good protection without feeling enclosed. The slide out desk functions well and is smooth, a bit narrow for extended homework or projects though. As for the steps, they're wide and well spaced, just the top frame edge feels a bit unfinished, fine but slightly utilitarian. This is a frame built for practicality, not refinement.
Storage Functionality
The integrated storage is the real selling point of the Felix. Drawers are good size for clothes or toys and open shelving works for books or baskets. It's a space saving design that makes sense for smaller rooms. Though there is a bit of a missed opportunity under the bed platform itself. The area behind the drawers and shelving is totally sealed off, that's wasted space in my eyes. A small hatch or pull out section would have made that unused area into bonus storage, something parents would love.
Everyday Use
In daily life the Felix performs well once built. It feels stable, no wobble or flex and it's not noisy to climb or use. The finish wipes clean easily, great for sticky hands and crayon marks. The size is compact enough to leave floor space free too, which is ideal for medium bedrooms. The design naturally encourages tidiness, kids seem to use the shelves and drawers because they're at hand. That said, I suspect the white finish might need a touch up over time if the room is heavily used.
Who It Suits
The Felix Mid Sleeper is ideal for families with limited space or those wanting a combination of storage, sleep and study in one. Perfect for kids aged around six and up who are confident climbing stairs and will use the desk and shelves. It's great for parents who value function over luxury aesthetics and don't mind some assembly effort to save on future clutter.
Who It Doesn't Suit
If you're after a bed that assembles quickly and hides all fixings, this isn't the one. It's also not for those that prioritise visual finesse, neat it is, but not elegant. The unused space under the bed platform is a small annoyance, a small access hatch or pull out area would have turned it into extra storage. Small gripes aside, if you're after a premium look, you'll need to spend more. The Felix is practical not pretty and wears that badge honestly.
Verdict
The Felix Mid Sleeper Bed Frame is a clever and practical choice for growing children who need more than just a bed. It offers integrated storage, workspace and play area in a compact, space saving design. The sturdy build and safety considered ladder are reassuring, and the slide out desk adds real versatility. It's not the easiest item to build and could look a touch more refined but hard to fault on functionality once put together. A sensible and well rounded option for families weighing space and budget, it's a hardworking bed that justifies its place in a busy home.
