Why our sleep experts loved it
The Dunlopillo® Millennium Latex Mattress is the cream of the crop. For sleepers seeking a latex mattress that breathes, cushions, and offers that classic springy bounce of latex, this is a great option. It’s supportive, cool, and as comfortable as a mattress can get. It’s also not cheap. The quality is excellent, but this is very much a high-end model.
Design & First Impressions
The Millennium is immediately luxe. Deep and generous at 24.5cm thick, it has an authoritative presence, wide at the edges and tapering slightly towards the ends. The minimalist and sleek design is very Dunlopillo, with a supremely refined and modern feel. The outer cover is smooth and silky to the touch. It’s noticeably cooler to the touch than a typical mattress cover. Dunlopillo calls it a Dunlopillo® Plus Sleep Surface. It’s also immediately fresh smelling, with none of the musty taint of some open-cell latex models.
Thanks to the traditional construction, there’s no unrolling or decompressing to do - it’s ready to sleep on right out of the box. The covers are breathable and hold little heat or moisture.
The Dunlopillo Millennium comes with an impression of quality and solidity. The sides are stable, the surface evenly responsive, and there’s no feeling of sinking or heaviness. There’s none of the dread you sometimes get from sinking into a thick layer of foamy squidge. It’s light and elastic, welcoming you to sink in and get supported. It also moves back to meet you as you change positions, with immediate and even resistance underfoot.
Construction & Materials
The latex core is what’s important here. It’s a single thick layer of Dunlopillo’s 100% natural Talalay latex. Talalay latex is the Cadillac of latex mattresses. Unlike synthetic blends, natural latex feels light and responsive on your skin. It also offers excellent all-over support, moulding to the body as you lie down, and then easing back to neutral as you move or change position. It won’t cradle or hold you like memory foam does, and this can be jarring if you’re used to deep contouring foam. But if you like the crisper support and pressure relief of latex, this is what you’re looking for.
Ventra™ Core Performance System
Ventra™ Core is a series of aerated channels built into the mattress core. They encourage airflow from the top of the mattress to the sides and bottom, helping to keep temperatures down and moisture dispersed. It works in combination with the latex to make a breathable mattress that never feels stuffy or overheated, even in summer.
Plus Sleep Surface
Dunlopillo Plus Sleep Surface is a proprietary blend of fabric finishes that enhance cooling. It works by maintaining a surface temperature up to 1°C cooler than body temperature. This encourages blood vessels to dilate slightly, a process known as thermal regulation. As a result, it enhances the body’s ability to stay cool.
Firmness & Feel
The Millennium is a medium on the scale of firmness. It’s a true medium. It moulds into shoulders and hips in a gentle cradling action, but it also provides enough support to keep the back in neutral alignment. For most sleepers, this is a comfortable range to fall into, and back and side sleepers in particular will find that its buoyant support cradles without engulfing. And that bounce - that hallmark of latex - is in full effect, providing a familiar lift and reactivity.
This mattress also has an immediate, responsive feel. Put simply, it feels like it’s moving. Latex is elastic and alive under your weight, where memory foam can be slow and syrupy. It’s especially refreshing if you’ve slept on memory foam for a long time, and it makes repositioning easier too. If you’re a fan of the slow, deep compression of high-density memory foam, the buoyancy and bounce of latex may not appeal to you, though.
Motion isolation is actually pretty good for a latex mattress. Dunlopillo has focused on airflow rather than dampening movement through thick layers of foam. As for edge support, the mattress does resist pressure at the sides, but it’s not as firm as a hybrid or a pocket sprung model. Instead, the overall effect is light and buoyant rather than densely compressed.
Temperature Regulation
This is the strong point of the Millennium. With the Ventra™ Core system, the open-cell structure of Talalay latex, and the advanced fabric finish of the Plus Sleep Surface, airflow is as good as it gets. The mattress breathes, and it stays cool to the touch even after hours of use. For hot sleepers, it’s a world away from standard foam or hybrid, keeping you fresher and more comfortable for longer.
Performance & Longevity
Build quality is very high. The single-sided design is as durable as they come, good for over a decade with rotation, and the latex itself is resistant to compression and sagging. Body impressions are rare, and if maintained with care, many Dunlopillo users find theirs lasting well over 15 years. It’s a weighty product, too, and a testament to the all-latex construction. Rotation is therefore more work, as it has no side handles or straps. Its weight also contributes to a steadier, premium feel once it’s in place.
Everyday Use
In terms of everyday use, the Millennium is consistently cool and supportive. The hypoallergenic properties of latex are a big selling point for sensitive or allergy-prone sleepers. Antibacterial, anti-dust mite, and easy to keep hygienic in general. It’s also quiet. Very quiet. Latex is a simple, stable substance. It’s less likely to creak, groan, or shift. Night after night, the Millennium will provide a quiet, silent performance. The non-turn design also keeps upkeep at a minimum, needing only occasional rotation to keep wear even.
One disadvantage is the cover. The Dunlopillo Millennium has no removable or washable outer cover. The Plus Sleep Surface is designed to be antibacterial and moisture resistant, but a washable and removable cover would be welcome at this price. A protective mattress cover is therefore a must if you want to protect its life.
Who It Suits
The Dunlopillo Millennium Latex Mattress suits sleepers who value a natural, breathable, and responsive mattress. It’s especially good for hot sleepers or those with allergies. Back and side sleepers will do best in it, while combo sleepers will find it easy to move around on. It’s also a premium option for luxury-focused shoppers.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
On the other hand, this mattress is not a great value for money or for those who expect a traditional pocket sprung feel. It’s a luxury investment, not an occasional purchase or a mattress for guests. It also may be a bridge too far if you’re used to and prefer memory foam. The deep hug of memory foam won’t be what you’re looking for in latex, and the bounce may take some getting used to.
Verdict
The Dunlopillo® Millennium Latex Mattress is an exceptional product with great temperature regulation and first-class comfort. It’s made from some of the best materials available and its breathable latex core, along with an advanced cooling surface, make for a supremely refreshing, supportive mattress. It outperforms many high-end foam mattresses but its high cost means it can’t be recommended to all. The Dunlopillo Millennium is a mattress for people who really value the materials, craftsmanship, and longevity of natural latex. If you can afford it, it’s a beautifully made, sustainable choice that will deliver many years of rest. For most people, however, it’s a premium indulgence rather than an essential product.
