Every Ergoflex mattress is medium-firm, and Dunlopillo runs from soft-medium to firm. Dunlopillo covers more of the firmness scale, which helps if two sleepers need different feels. Ergoflex is clearly the cheaper way in; Dunlopillo's range starts well above it. At the top end Dunlopillo goes further still. Ergoflex doesn't have enough owner reviews with us yet to score fairly.

Ergoflex

Ergoflex entered the UK in 2006 and is one of the original bed-in-a-box brands, predating Emma, Simba and Nectar by nearly a decade. The brand has stayed true to a single-product philosophy throughout, with the Ergoflex 5G being the current and only mattress in the range. It is a deep, five-layer all-foam mattress measuring about 23 cm, built entirely from Ergoflex's own in-house manufactured foams and wrapped in a removable TENCEL cover.

The single-product approach is deliberate. Rather than splitting engineering effort across a dozen models, Ergoflex invests all of its development into refining the 5G. The result is a mattress that has been steadily improved over multiple generations without the complexity of a large catalogue.

Dunlopillo

Dunlopillo have been in the mattress “game” for nearly a century, dating back to 1929 when a scientist created what we know today as Dunlopillo Latex. The latex would form the backbone of all future mattresses and a staple of the industry as a whole.

The company has since gone under new ownership and sees itself as part of the Relyon group where it enjoys an enviable position as one of the market leaders in latex mattresses around the UK and worldwide. If you are looking for a mattress that possesses many of the qualities of memory foam without the downsides of heat build up, latex could be for you.

Ergoflex owner satisfaction

Ergoflex carries OEKO-TEX certification on its materials and a 10-year guarantee as standard. The 30-night trial is shorter than most current rivals, with Emma and Simba at 200 nights and Nectar at 365, but it is enough time to form a proper opinion on the feel.

The single-product model removes the decision fatigue that affects buyers shopping brands with large catalogues. There is one mattress, one feel, one price. That simplicity is a genuine selling point for buyers who find the mattress market overwhelming.

Ergoflex supportiveness

The 5G uses a 9 cm high-density visco-elastic comfort layer for pressure relief, a 5 cm cool-sleep airflow system for temperature management, and a 9 cm resilient base for structural support. The overall feel is medium firm and the foam contours to the body progressively rather than sinking in immediately. Back sleepers and side sleepers of average weight are well served.

The deep all-foam build means the 5G does not have the bounce or responsiveness of a hybrid pocket spring mattress. Stomach sleepers and restless sleepers who change position frequently during the night may find the slower foam response restrictive compared with a spring-based alternative.

Ergoflex durability

In-house foam manufacturing is the single biggest advantage Ergoflex has on durability. Because the brand makes its own foams rather than buying from third-party suppliers, the density and quality of the raw material is controlled from production through to finished mattress.

The 10-year guarantee backs the build quality, and the removable TENCEL cover helps with long-term hygiene by allowing the outer layer to be washed independently of the foam core. For an all-foam mattress at this price tier, the durability profile is strong.

Dunlopillo owner satisfaction

Owner satisfaction is high across the lineup. The striking thing in the reviews is the repeat buyers, owners replacing a Dunlopillo they had slept on for 16 or 20 years with the same again. Comfort and support draw most of the praise, and the complaint that comes up most is the lack of turning handles, with the weight and the price behind it. This does create a minor inconvenience when it comes to rotations but does help highlight just how impressive the lineup is when the largest vocal problem is around handles.

When you consider the life expectancy of a Dunlopillo mattress on average and look at the cost per night of sleep as a result, the entire range makes for incredible value for money.

Good Points: For someone with a weak back and a tendency for sore joints this provides a good balance between back support and comfort. It is soft to the touch but supports well when you lie down. It needs a slatted base for ventilation. Improvement Points: It is heavy and has no handles, so it is difficult to carry. Our old Dunlopillo mattress had a proper upholstered cover with handles. Even with the best discount it is expensive.

Love this mattress. It gives plenty of support and we don't disturb each other moving. We have a tripod cat and even she's comfortable walking on it and she is extremely wary of surfaces that aren't stable so that's a definite seal of approval. I have no back pain anymore and actually want to spend time in bed just watching T.V or reading whereas before I could not stay in bed at all without my back killing me. Very happy.

Good Points: Love my new mattress, tried several Dunlopillo mattresses in shops and like the gentle support of this one. For me it offers the support with out being too hard. Tries a few orthopaedic mattresses and just found them uncomfortable. It's a bit more than I planned to spend but have no regrets. Decided to buy online as it was in stock so received next day and they took my old one away which was a God send.

Good Points: Looks good. Improvement Points: Far too firm and gives off strange odour. Gave it three weeks then bought a mattress topper. If I could I'd change it.
