Why our sleep experts loved it
The Dormeo Octasmart Premium Deluxe Mattress is engineered with the goal of taking the high-tech concept of smart sleep and making it accessible to everyday consumers. It certainly does that to a degree. It is a breathable, smartly engineered, and genuinely comfortable mattress. However, we can’t help but feel a little let down by the shallow depth of 19cm. This makes it a lot slimmer than most mattress you would find in this price range. Comfort and pressure relief aren’t sacrificed though, and the mattress does a great job in those departments, being rated as soft on the firmness scale. This makes the Octasmart a good buy for people who want softness and innovation more than sheer bulk or thickness.
Design & First Impressions
Straight out of the box, the Octasmart Premium Deluxe is impressive. Coming to you rolled and vacuum-packed, this mattress expands very quickly to a depth of 19cm. The removable smart performance cover feels smooth to the touch and lightly quilted. It also feels very breathable, and this is largely due to the hundreds of tiny comfort pockets woven into the design that do actually make it feel that little bit more plush. Despite the mattress being slimmer than many we’ve tried in this class, it still feels neat and nicely proportioned once you have it lying on a base. Branding and overall presentation is quite slick and the mattress feels very modern and up-to-the-minute. It really does fit into the Dormeo brand ethos of being a highly technology-led approach to a good night’s sleep.
Construction & Materials
At the heart of this mattress is Dormeo’s proprietary Octaspring® technology. It is a system of memory foam springs which are layered and sectioned into a number of smart zones which are designed to flex independently and provide customised support to different areas of the body. These foam-based springs have the contouring advantages of memory foam, while still feeling like a sprung mattress with bounce and responsiveness. Firm under the hips, softer under the shoulders and more adaptive through the midsection, it’s a neat and innovative system that provides pressure relief where it’s needed while also allowing different parts of the body to sink at different rates as you move and settle.
Supporting this is an Ecocell® foam base which is dense, springy and engineered with an open-cell structure with 3D hexagonal cavities. This allows air to move through the material with relative freedom. On top of this is a thick layer of softer memory foam that provides cushioning and further pressure relief. Its adaptive properties allow it to mould gently to your shape, which provides that slow body-hugging feel that most people love about memory foam. All of these components are also recyclable which is a nice sustainable touch and one which puts Dormeo a step ahead of most other brands in this space.
Firmness & Feel
Rated soft by the company, we would agree that the Octasmart Premium Deluxe definitely errs on the gentler side of the firmness scale. It’s soft to touch, and on first contact it has a very cloud-like feeling as the memory foam parts of the mattress start to conform to the curves of your body. There is some structure though, and the octaspring zones stop you from sinking too far in, especially around the hips where the springs firm up. However, if you are looking for a firmer, more traditional feel, this probably isn’t going to do it for you.
Depth is also a factor in the overall feel of the mattress, as at 19cm it is a little less substantial than you might expect for this price bracket. It’s no throwaway by any means, but it also doesn’t quite have that deeply cushioned, sumptuously enveloping feel that some of the thicker models do. It will be perfect for lighter sleepers or those that prefer a soft mattress that still offers good support, but for those on the heavier end of the scale, we could see some people wishing for a few extra centimetres of depth to give a more robust foundation.
Temperature Regulation
A claim Dormeo makes a lot about this mattress is breathability, and it’s true that it is a very breathable design. The Octavent™ Air System actually helps a lot with heat retention, drawing in cooler air from the ambient room while releasing warm, moist air throughout the night. This is further enhanced by the three-dimensional open-cell structure of both the memory foam layers and the Ecocell® foam base which both allow air to pass through easily. Even on warm summer nights, the surface feels reasonably fresh and dry to the touch, which is a great feature in this type of mattress.
Support & Performance
Pressure distribution is good all over, and this is largely down to the Octaspring® system. It flexes and adapts to offer support that is more evenly distributed, and the five smart zones allow just the right amount of give and resistance where it’s needed to help with spinal alignment. It is not as firm, nor as deeply supportive as many other hybrids or pocket-sprung mattresses, but it is great for comfort and motion isolation. Movement transfer is very low, so couples won’t feel one another moving around as much, and it contours and supports very well under the curves of side sleepers and those who need a bit of gentle pressure relief.
What lets the mattress down slightly is its lack of depth, and at only 19cm it is a lot slimmer than most mattress you would find in this price range. It’s not unsupported by any means, but it just doesn’t feel like it has the same weight, heft or longevity behind it. It works very well in the short term, but heavier sleepers are going to find that it compresses more quickly than a thicker model might.
Practical Features
The Octasmart Premium Deluxe is a single-sided mattress, so you do not need to flip it, just give it an occasional turn to help keep wear even. The removable cover is also a nice touch, allowing you to keep it clean and hygienic for longer. Like many Dormeo mattresses, it also comes to you rolled and boxed, which means that it is a lot easier to get into position than traditional mattresses. The hypoallergenic properties and lack of chemical odour also helps it appeal to those with sensitivities.
Who It Suits
The Octasmart Premium Deluxe is best suited to side sleepers, or people of a lighter build who want a soft, plush surface that offers advanced cooling and motion isolation. It is also great for eco-conscious consumers, as it is made up entirely of recyclable components and has really efficient packaging. If you value high-tech design, temperature control and immediate comfort, it’s a great option.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
Heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firm or medium-firm feel are going to find the Octasmart a little too soft, and the 19cm depth also won’t provide the level of support and longevity that some of these people will want. It’s also not a great option for those that are fans of the dense and deep structure of a hybrid mattress or a pillow-top model. It’s very much a comfort first design rather than one that is built to heavy-duty use.
Verdict
In summary, the Dormeo Octasmart Premium Deluxe Mattress is a smart and high-quality bit of sleep technology. It is soft, breathable and a pleasure to sleep on, especially if you are someone who tends to get a bit warm at night. The only downside is the mattress’s slim 19cm depth, which makes it feel a lot less substantial than other mattresses in its price range. For those that value comfort, breathability and modern innovation, it is a real stand out, but be aware that it is a lot thinner than you might expect from this price point.
