Why our sleep experts loved it
The Healthy Growth Toddler Mattress from Silentnight is one of their first attempts at capitalising on the toddler and baby mattress segment. I got my hands on this one while I was having a look at the newer Silentnight ranges and, straight away, it felt a lot more 'proper mattress' than the old school foam slabs most of us grew up with. Gone are the day's of a foam sheet being sufficient for little ones, this new range of eco comfort luxury gives you many of the same specifications of a adult mattress in baby form, ensuring they get the same support and comfort as you do.
This is a firm mattress that will offer a good amount of support for your child. When I pressed down into the middle with my palm it didn't sink much at all, and the surface bounced back quickly, so it feels like it's built to keep them nicely level rather than letting them dip in. The eco comfort fibres are standard in most of the new ranges from Silentnight and are made from recycled bottles. Running my hand across the top it felt smooth enough, but it's not that thick, squidgy 'hotel topper' feel, so if you're expecting loads of plushness you'll be disappointed. The recycling results in a luxuriously soft and comfortable fibre that works really well as a comfort layer while being great for the environment
One thing I didn't love is that, because it's on the firmer side, a lighter toddler who sleeps on their side might find it a bit unforgiving around the shoulder and hip. Also, if your little one runs warm, these fibre layers can still hold a bit of heat compared to something with more obvious airflow, so I'd be pairing it with breathable bedding rather than anything too plasticky. For the money, I'd also like to see really chunky, easy-to-grab handles for rotating, because you will end up moving it about now and again.
