Why our sleep experts loved it
I spent several weeks with the Lytham Memory Support Mattress and wanted to know if its mix of memory foam and springs could offer a decent balance between comfort and value. On first glance it looks inviting, and there is a nice soft quilted top that gives a good first impression. Once I started sleeping on it though, it quickly showed where it shines and where it falls short. This is an honest, middle tier mattress that does some things right and a few things less well.
Delivery
Delivery was quick and simple. The mattress arrived full size rather than rolled, which meant it could go straight on the bed base with no waiting period to inflate. The delivery team handled everything cleanly and removed the outer wrapping. There was a faint new fabric smell that faded within a few hours. The stitching looked neat and the surface was smooth with no loose tufts. It was lighter than I expected, easy to move, and ready to sleep on that evening.
Unboxing
There is nothing dramatic about setting it up. You peel off the plastic, lift it into place and it is ready. The quilted top feels soft and the surface has a small amount of spring when you press it with your hand. The side handles are stitched firmly which helps later when you rotate it. There were no marks, no rough edges, and no chemical odour. It looked clean and well finished out of the packaging.
Construction
The Lytham Memory Support Mattress combines an open coil spring base with a layer of memory foam on top. The coil unit provides the main structure and gives a bit of bounce under movement. The foam layer above it is there to smooth pressure points and add a touch of contouring. Around the outside is a reinforced border that keeps the edge from collapsing. The cover is a soft stretch knit fabric quilted with hypoallergenic fibres made partly from recycled material. The overall height is around 22 cm which makes it a slimmer mattress that is easy to lift and rotate. It is a non turn design, so rotation is the only maintenance needed.
Comfort
When lying on my back it feels supportive. The springs keep the spine aligned and the foam softens the surface just enough to stop it feeling hard. On my side it is less forgiving. The shoulder and hip press into the foam quickly and meet the firmer coils underneath. After a while I could feel a bit of pressure in those areas. Lying on my front it holds up well and stops the midsection from dipping too low. The overall feel is a true medium firmness. It is stable, balanced, and fairly neutral, but it does not have that deeper comfort or body hug you get from thicker layers of foam.
Temperature regulation
This is one of the weaker parts. The open coil base allows some air to move through the mattress but the memory foam above it tends to hold warmth. During cooler weather that feels comfortable and cosy. On warmer nights it starts to build heat under the body. It is not unbearable but it is noticeable. Using a breathable cotton sheet and keeping the room ventilated helps. If you are naturally warm when you sleep, this mattress will likely run on the hot side for you.
Motion transfer
Because the coils are linked rather than individually pocketed, you can feel some movement when a partner turns or gets up. The foam layer softens that motion a little but not completely. It is fine if you sleep alone or if you both sleep fairly still, but if one person moves a lot it will be felt across the surface. It is one of the compromises that come with an open coil system at this price point.
Edge support
The reinforced perimeter does its job. When I sit on the edge to put socks on the mattress stays firm and does not sag heavily. Lying near the edge feels secure and there is little sense of rolling off. The edge support also helps the mattress keep its shape over time which is useful for a non turn design. It is not as rigid as high end hybrids but it is better than most budget foam mattresses.
Everyday use
After several weeks the mattress softened slightly which actually improved comfort. It started quite firm but settled to a more even feel. The surface stayed flat and supportive with no early dips or lumps. Rotating it every few weeks spreads the wear and helps maintain shape. The lighter weight makes that easy to do on your own. It feels durable enough for a few good years of nightly use as long as you care for it properly, though the thinner foam layer means it will show signs of aging sooner than deeper mattresses.
Who this mattress suits
The Lytham Memory Support Mattress suits back sleepers who like a medium feel and a bit of spring. It is also suitable for occasional front sleepers and lighter users who prefer not to sink too far. It works well in guest rooms or as a first home mattress because it is affordable and easy to handle. If you sleep cool or in a room that stays moderate in temperature, the slight warmth will actually make it more comfortable.
Who it does not suit
Side sleepers who need deep pressure relief will find the comfort layer too thin. Hot sleepers may find it retains too much heat. Couples with very different body weights or restless partners may feel each other moving. And if you want that slow melting contour that higher density foam provides, you will not find it here. This mattress is built for practicality, not indulgence.
Care and maintenance
Because it is one sided you only rotate it head to toe. Do this once a month for the first three months and then every couple of months after that. Always use a breathable protector from day one to keep it clean and to meet the comfort guarantee conditions. Let it air out in the morning before making the bed so moisture can escape. Avoid jumping or bending it sharply and use the handles when rotating. These simple steps will help it keep its shape for longer.
Verdict
The Lytham Memory Support Mattress is a fair and functional choice for its price bracket. It gives steady support, a modest layer of comfort, and a solid edge. It also runs warm, transfers some motion, and can feel a little firm for side sleepers. It is not luxurious but it is honest. For a guest room, a rental property, or as a starting mattress, it makes sense. For long term use by someone who values deep comfort and cool sleeping, there are better options. I do not dislike it, but I would call it serviceable rather than special. It does its job without surprises, which for many people will be exactly what they want.
