Why our sleep experts loved it
I tried the Sleep Story Luxury 2000 at Furniture Village and the first thought that sprang to mind (sorry) is that it does what it says on the tin. It is a no-frills medium-feel pocket spring mattress with a liberal scattering of natural fibres and a sensible mid-market price that doesn’t feel too high for what you are getting. It is not the fluffiest or most techy option in the showroom, but for the money I thought it was comfortable, supportive and refreshingly low-maintenance to sleep on.
Construction & Materials
The base is 2000 individually pocketed springs in the king size, a specification that gives it a well-judged balance of support and helps it contour without that rolling-together feeling. On top of those springs you get natural layers, in this case wool, cotton, silk and cashmere. They add a little loft, ease pressure on the shoulders and hips and help the mattress breathe. All this is wrapped in a soft, breathable Tencel cover that feels cool and smooth to the touch. The depth of 28 cm (11 inches) is slim enough to look neat on most bed frames and works with standard fitted sheets. The mattress is hypoallergenic and made in the UK by Highgrove for Furniture Village.
Firmness & Feel
On the website, Furniture Village list this as a medium. That chimes with my impression, although it does sit a smidgeon on the supportive end of medium for the first few nights and then relaxes a fraction as the fibres bed in. Lying on my back, my lower back was lifted rather than hammocked, and on my side I had plenty of sink through the natural layers to soften the shoulder without losing the alignment through the waist. There is no pillow top here, so the feel is classic pocket spring, responsive and orderly rather than marshmallowy. If you do not like overly squashy tops, I suspect you will like the honest, springy character of this one.
Performance & Support
Pocket springs offer better motion isolation than traditional open coil beds, and 2000 in a king is enough to spread the weight evenly and keep motion transfer well in hand for a traditional sprung mattress. When my partner rolled, I felt a nudge not a wave, which is about right at this price. Edge support is fairly good for sitting and sleeping at the edge due to the firmer perimeter feel you typically get from this type of construction. All in all it is a mattress that feels like it props you up, not in, and that makes it easy to change position if you toss and turn a lot in your sleep.
Temperature Regulation
Wool and cotton plus that Tencel cover keeps the air moving through this mattress. I slept through a warm night in a centrally heated room and never felt that heat build up you can get with denser foams. The surface never felt clammy and the fibres wick away moisture effectively. If you tend to overheat on memory foam, this will feel fresher and more breathable by comparison.
Practical Features
This is a no-turn mattress, which means you need to rotate it regularly but you don’t have to flip it. Less strain on your back and, given the depth, a practical no-brainer. The company advises airing before use and keeping bed slats no further than 7.5 cm apart, both sensible tips that will help the mattress last as long as possible. Available in sizes from small single up to super king, and if you want tidy storage there are matching divan bases.
Who It Suits
If you are after a medium-feel, pocket-sprung mattress with a naturally breathable top at a fair price, this should be on your shortlist.
Back and side sleepers up to average and moderately heavy builds will likely find the combination of lift and give here works well.
Couples who prefer a responsive, easy-to-move-on surface will like the classic spring feel.
If you run hot, the wool, cotton and Tencel cover are a plus.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
If you are after the sink-in, memory foam hug or an ultra-plush pillow-top then this is not for you.
Very heavy sleepers who need a firmer, more reinforced build may be better off with a firmer-rated pocket spring gauge or a hybrid model with more zoning.
If you are after absolute silence and zero motion transfer then an all-foam model may edge this one for the price.
Final Verdict
Well priced and built with the right ingredients, the Sleep Story Luxury 2000 is a sensible, good-value buy. The spring count gives it a credible base, the natural layers on top feel breathable and comfortable, and the finish is neat. I found it a decent bet in the showroom; fine, not amazing, not bad, which is exactly what many people want at this budget, a mattress that delivers on the fundamentals without fuss. If you want dependable medium support with a naturally breathable top this one will deliver for the money.
