Why our sleep experts loved it
I’m writing this review of the Dura Roma Deluxe Mattress based on online specifications and what I know from a decade in the UK mattress trade, not from sleeping on it. And I want to be really clear about that. Archers is up in Scotland, and I did not have the chance to pop in and assess it in person, and I have not trialled it at home either. So this is a spec led review with a healthy dose of realism, plus the kind of scepticism I reserve for any mattress that promises a lot while giving you limited detail on the actual comfort build.
Design and features
The Roma Deluxe is a traditional, old school open coil mattress, built around extra firm hourglass springs running head to toe, linked with helical wire. That’s the classic budget workhorse design, and when it’s done well it can feel stable, supportive, and surprisingly long lasting for the money. The stretch knit cover should feel nicer than the cheaper woven damask you still see on firm coils, and the deep quilted panels on both sides suggest it’s built to be flipped, not just rotated. I like that, because true dual sided mattresses tend to hold their shape better over time if the owner actually keeps up with the turning routine.
The rod edge wire around the perimeter is also a positive. On open coils, edge support can be the first thing to go, and roll off is a real complaint area, especially for couples who use the full width of the bed. A reinforced border won’t turn it into a pocket spring with a foam encasement, but it should make the sides feel less collapsible when you perch to put socks on.
Mattress comfort
Extra firm is the headline, and I believe it. Open coils have a buoyant, push back feel anyway, and when the spring gauge is firm and the comfort layers are basic white fibre, you get a surface that stays on top of you rather than letting you sink in. That can feel brilliantly supportive if you like a flatter sleep, but it can also feel unyielding if you expect any contour. My concern, based on specs alone, is that fibre fillings can compress quicker than people expect, and once the top settles, the firmness can feel even more abrupt. But if you want that no nonsense, very upright support, this design usually delivers.
I’m also cautious about how brands describe quilting, because deep quilting sounds plush, but it often just means the fibres are stitched down to stop them shifting. It doesn’t automatically mean pressure relief. So if you buy this hoping for hotel softness with firm support underneath, I think you’ll be disappointed.
Suitability
This is a mattress I’d point toward dedicated back sleepers who know they genuinely prefer firm. If you sleep on your back and you want your hips held up, the Roma’s structure should keep your spine from dipping, and that can be a relief if you’re used to sagging foam or tired pocket springs. It can also suit some stomach sleepers, although I always add a warning that too firm can sometimes force the lower back to arch if the chest and pelvis don’t settle evenly.
But for side sleepers, I’m not going to sugar coat it. Most side sleepers need give at the shoulder and hip, and an extra firm open coil with fibre quilting is typically the opposite of that. If you have an hourglass shape, or you wake with pins and needles in your arm, or you already feel pressure on your hip, this style is very likely to make that worse. Even if you tolerate it at first, pressure points tend to show up at 2am, not in the first five minutes.
The verdict
The Dura Roma Deluxe Mattress looks like a straightforward, traditional, extra firm, flip friendly open coil that prioritises support and durability over luxury comfort. I like the dual sided build and the rod edge, and I like that it isn’t pretending to be something trendy. But I’m sceptical about comfort for anyone who needs contouring, and I’d go into it expecting a firm, functional feel rather than cushioned relief. If you’re the right sleeper type, mostly back sleeping and you want firm, it could be a very sensible buy. If you’re a side sleeper chasing softness, I’d keep looking.
