Why our sleep experts loved it
The Deluxe Memory Flex Medium Mattress is one of those very traditional-feeling builds that still nods to modern comfort. It pairs an open coil spring unit with a memory foam layer, then finishes it with a hand tufted construction and a knitted stretch cover. I haven’t been able to see or test this mattress in person as Archers is based in Scotland, and my assessment here is led by the published specifications plus the customer feedback provided. So this isn’t a home trial review. But specs can still tell you a lot, and in this case they point to a solid, no-nonsense mattress aimed at everyday support rather than a hotel-style sink-in feel.
I will say though, I’ve tested a lot of open coil plus memory foam combos over the years, and they nearly always feel more ‘traditional spring mattress with a bit of cushioning’ than true memory foam. If you’re expecting that slow, heavy sink, this type of build usually doesn’t do it.
Design and features
At its core you’ve got a robust open coil spring system. Open coil tends to be a bit more forgiving than pocket springs, and it often suits people who want a slightly bouncier, more familiar mattress feel. The presence of hand tufting is a genuine positive. It usually helps stop the comfort layers from drifting over time, which is one of the main reasons some mattresses start to feel lumpy or uneven. I like seeing tufting on a value-friendly mattress because it suggests the build is trying to last, rather than just feel good for the first few months.
One thing I always check with tufted mattresses is how ‘proud’ the tufts sit. If they’re quite pronounced you can sometimes feel the little dips between them, especially if you’re lighter in weight. With a knitted stretch cover it should help smooth that out a bit, but it’s still something I’d keep in mind if you’re fussy about surface feel.
The thick rod-edge wire around the perimeter is another sensible touch. Edge support is often where affordable mattresses fall down, and that rolling-off sensation is a real mood killer if you share the bed. If the edge reinforcement is done properly, it should help you use more of the sleep surface. Still, rod edge is not a magic wand. If you sit on the side of the bed to get dressed every day, any medium mattress can fatigue there over time.
Also, open coil is not the best for motion isolation. If you sleep with someone who fidgets, you’ll usually feel more movement through an open coil unit than you would with a decent pocket spring mattress.
Mattress comfort
The memory foam layer is designed to soften with body heat and mould to your shape. In theory that should take the edge off pressure around hips and shoulders, which is why side sleepers often get on well with memory foam. What I will say is that with an open coil base underneath, the feel is unlikely to be that deep, slow-melting memory foam hug that some people expect. It’s probably more of a comfort topper effect, adding cushioning while the springs keep things responsive.
When I’m lying on this sort of build (memory foam over open coil), I normally notice the foam gives me that initial ‘ahh’ at the shoulder, then the spring unit pushes back quite quickly underneath. That can be a really nice balance if you don’t like feeling stuck, but it can also mean lighter side sleepers still feel a bit of pressure if the foam layer isn’t especially deep.
Heat is the other trade-off. Even with airflow from open coil, memory foam can still sleep warmer than a basic polyfoam comfort layer, especially if you’re the type who runs hot anyway. If you already know you overheat, I wouldn’t assume ‘memory foam but breathable’ automatically fixes it.
Customer feedback leans strongly positive on comfort and support, with multiple buyers calling it very comfortable and saying it delivers a good night’s sleep. One review specifically mentions it staying cool thanks to breathability, which fits with open coil designs that allow more airflow than dense all-foam mattresses. But not everyone agrees on firmness. One customer bought it expecting medium to firm and found it softer than their previous mattress. That’s not a small point. If you’re coming from a very firm bed, a true medium can feel surprisingly plush at first.
Suitability
In my view, this medium tension is a strong match for side sleepers and also works for back sleepers of average weight who like a little give at the shoulders. And it’s likely a comfortable option for guest rooms, teenagers, and everyday family use, which is echoed by the review mentioning a grandson sleeping well on it. If you’re a heavier back sleeper or you wake with a stiff lower back, I’d be cautious. You might do better with a firmer support level for a more consistent spinal line through the night.
It’s also one-sided, so you can’t flip it. You do need to rotate it head to toe to even out wear. That’s normal with memory foam, but it does mean maintenance matters if you want it to stay feeling even.
The verdict
Based on the build and the customer comments, I’d describe the Deluxe Memory Flex Medium as a practical, supportive mattress that gets the basics right. I like the tufted finish, the edge reinforcement, and the balanced approach of adding memory foam without losing the springy support underneath. The main negatives are the usual ones for this style. Open coil won’t isolate movement as well as pocket springs, and medium can read softer than some expect. And because I haven’t tested it in person, I can’t vouch for how refined the foam feels or how well it holds its shape after years. There are also a couple of delivery complaints in the wider feedback set, and while that doesn’t reflect the mattress itself, it does affect the buying experience.
For me personally, it sits in the ‘decent everyday option’ bracket rather than a wow mattress. If you want a medium mattress with a traditional feel and a bit of contouring, this looks like a genuinely good-value choice. But if you’re chasing a very firm, very structured sleep, I wouldn’t gamble. I’d pick something firmer and more obviously engineered for that job.
