Why our sleep experts loved it
I got hands-on with the Cassia Grey Upholstered Sofa Bed in a Bensons for Beds store, and it’s one of those sofa beds that looks a bit more ‘proper sofa’ than you might expect at the price. With its adjustable back positions, solid wood legs, and choice of four colours, it’s clearly designed to be practical without looking like a spare-room afterthought. Customers seem to really enjoy it too, which is always a good sign.
One of the standout features of this sofa bed is its adjustability. With two back positions, you can switch between a sitting and sleeping position, which is handy if you’re using it day-to-day and not just when someone stays over. When I tried the mechanism in-store it was straightforward, but it does take a bit of a firm pull to get it moving, so I wouldn’t call it a one-finger job. The solid wood legs give it a sturdy and durable feel, although do bear in mind wood legs can mark softer flooring if you drag it about rather than lift it. The 5-year guarantee is decent, but it’s not the longest I’ve seen on this type of furniture.
One of the common comments from customers is the quality of the product, it is beautifully made and feels very sturdy, and many of them found it to be good value for money. I had a look over the upholstery and seams while I was there and it felt neatly finished, no loose threads or anything obvious. It is also easy to assemble, taking only 40 minutes for two people to set it up, although if you’re doing it solo you’ll probably want to allow longer just because of the awkward lifting. The delivery team gets good feedback, but it’s still worth measuring your access because sofa beds can be a pain in tight hallways.
Comfort is where you need to be a bit realistic, because a sofa bed is always a compromise. Sitting on it, I found it supportive and upright enough for a proper sit, not that slouchy ‘sink and disappear’ feel. Lying back in the bed position, it felt fine for the odd night, but I could tell it’s not going to replace a real mattress if you’ve got guests staying for a week. If you’re a side sleeper, you might find your shoulder notices the firmer feel more than you’d like, especially if you’re lighter in weight.
Design-wise, it’s a good-looking bit of kit and the grey upholstery is an easy win for most rooms. The solid wood legs help it look less bulky, but they also mean you’ll see dust underneath, so you’ll want to keep on top of that if it’s in a main living space.
Overall, I like the Cassia Sofa Bed as a practical spare-bed option that doesn’t scream ‘spare bed’. For me personally it sits in the good bracket for occasional sleeping and regular sitting, but I wouldn’t buy it expecting nightly use like a proper bed. If you want something for guests, a home office, or a spare room that still looks smart, it’s a solid shout, just go in with the right expectations on comfort in bed mode.
