Testing Team Takeaways

To test the Cosmopolitan Helen Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame we have people from our testing team take a closer look at the mattress and form their own opinions. Below is their observations.

The green Helen caught my eye straight away in the showroom, with the curved shape and soft chenille giving it a much more polished, cosy feel than a standard storage bed. As an average-weight combi sleeper, I liked how padded and comfortable the headboard felt for sitting up and shifting around, even though this was very much an in-store impression rather than an overnight test. The ottoman storage is the real practical win, especially for family bedrooms where spare bedding and seasonal bits need somewhere to disappear. My only hesitation is the chenille: it looks lovely now, but with children, pets or everyday rubbing, I’d be prepared to baby it a little.

Why our sleep experts loved it

I tested the Cosmopolitan Helen Upholstered Ottoman Bed Frame in store, and the green version did make me pause. That deep forest shade is the reason this bed works. It gives the curved shape some weight and makes the frame look dearer than it probably would in a paler fabric. The price still feels a touch high to me, though the ottoman storage does change the maths because many retailers charge extra for that upgrade.

The soft chenille is the part I kept going back to. Nice under the hand, photogenic under showroom lighting, slightly worrying for normal life. I would be careful with this fabric from day one, because textured upholstery can show rubbed areas long before the frame itself has any structural issue. Strong shade. Fussy surface.

Shape, colour and first impression

The Helen has rounded corners, a padded headboard and a low, cosy outline. It avoids the hard rectangular look you get from many storage beds, and the little wooden feet help it sit more lightly on the floor. One customer said the legs make the bed stand out, and I agree. They stop the base looking too blocky.

The colour range runs to three options. Green was the most convincing in store, with navy close behind. The mink tone will suit softer rooms, although I would be wary of marks on a lighter chenille. A customer described the blue as “beautiful contemporary soft chenille”, and that tallies with my impression. The finish has a plush, sofa-like quality rather than a flat fabric-bed feel.

That said, the collaboration with Cosmopolitan does feel like a styling hook more than a build argument. The bed looks edited and fashionable, fair enough, but I would not pay extra for the magazine connection itself. I would pay for the colour, the ottoman base and the overall shape.

Build and storage

The display model was tidy around the seams. Upholstery tension looked even, and the padding had enough softness to make the headboard comfortable for sitting up. I could not judge long-term fabric stretch from a showroom visit, so I would inspect the corners closely on delivery, as rounded upholstered edges can be unforgiving once the fabric starts to pull.

The ottoman is the practical reason this bed earns consideration. Spare bedding, throws or out-of-season clothes can disappear under the mattress without needing a separate divan drawer layout. Exact internal storage dimensions were not listed, so buyers planning to store large vacuum bags should check before ordering. “Spacious” is useful as a description, but measurements are better.

Compared with something like the Dunelm Vivian Ottoman Bed, the Helen feels dressier and softer to the touch. The Dunelm option is the one I would look at for a simpler everyday fabric. The Helen is more of a style buy.

Best fit in a real bedroom

This frame suits a room where the bed is meant to carry the look. Plain walls, simple lighting, maybe one strong colour repeated nearby. In that setting, the green Helen does a lot without needing heavy bedding or a feature wall.

Busy bedrooms may make it feel overdesigned. The curves are pleasant, but they are not subtle, and the chenille already brings texture. I would also think twice in a home with pets or children. Cleaning soft upholstery is rarely as easy as the showroom makes it seem, and this bed does not strike me as the most forgiving choice for everyday knocks.

Customer comments compared with my test

The customer notes about statement curves and a cosy feel match what I saw. The headboard and corners do give the Helen a softer presence than a straight-edged ottoman, and the fabric is pleasant at first touch. That is its charm.

The reviews I saw lean heavily on first impressions, though. I understand why, because this is a bed that photographs well and feels inviting immediately. Wear is the question. A showroom cannot tell me how the chenille will look after years of leaning against the headboard with hair products, dressing gowns and morning tea in the mix.

Decision

I would buy the Helen in green before any other colour. Navy is the sensible fallback. At this price, I would skip the mink unless the room is very low-traffic, because the fabric is already asking for careful ownership before the bed has even left the shop floor.

The Helen bed frame is beautifully designed, with statement curves on the headboard and corners. It gives your room a cosy feel thanks to the soft chenille fabric in a choice of three on-trend colours: rich forest green, deep ocean blue and a warm mink tone.
