Why our sleep experts loved it
Introduction
In the pursuit of comfort and restful sleep, the choice of your mattress remains pivotal. Our attention has been recently drawn to the Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress, a product that boasts of providing personalized support and maximum comfort. Staking its claim in the lineup of Silentnight products and exclusive to Bensons for Beds, it's no surprise that this mattress piqued our interest. But how does it measure up in reality? That's what we sought to find out, rigorously testing it in-store to give you a no-frills, detailed review.
Design and Features
The Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress seems to have been designed with some thought, composed of a Miracoil® springs system consisting of 782 springs. To put it in context, the Miracoil system is a notoriously firm, rigid system that doesn't offer much by way of responsiveness. Its intriguing allure lies in its distinctive structure, ensuring there's no roll together and thus keeps disturbances from your partner to a bare minimum. However, its rigid style does have its downsides which we shall delve into later.
This mattress is padded with a layer of Eco Comfort Fibres™. Made from 78% recycled materials, this innovation claims to offer both comfort and breathability, a welcome feature for those hot sleepers among us. Call me a cynic, but in my years of reviewing mattresses, these 'cooling' features often fall short, and this was no exception.
The mattress also endeavours to provide luxury with its Tencel cover. Made from sustainable sources and claiming to be twice as soft as cotton. In principle, this sounds promising, but is it as good as it sounds? Unfortunately, this element underwhelmed my expectations. Despite Tencel's touted temperature-regulating qualities, I still found myself uncomfortably warm during my trial on the product.
In addition to these features, the mattress boasts a hand-tufted design, assumedly for a more supportive feel. As a reviewer, I've seen my fair share of tufted mattresses, and in my experience, they tend to offer a more rigid sleeping surface. This was no exception, making for a very firm, almost jarring feel.
Notably, the Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress has an impressive height of 27cm, contributing to an imposing sleeping surface. It is also a type of mattress that doesn't need to be flipped - just a regular rotation from head to toe is enough to maintain its longevity and comfort.
Mattress Comfort
While this mattress may appear impressive in its specifications and purported benefits, the proof of a mattress truly lies in its comfort. Here I'm afraid, is where this mattress didn't quite cut it for me. The dreaded Miracoil system I mentioned earlier? Well, it makes the mattress feel rigid with minimal responsiveness. Such stiffness might be appealing to a particular niche of sleepers, but for someone like me, who enjoys a modicum of sink and moulding from a mattress, it felt too inflexible.
The 'zoned support' promised by the design didn't translate into palpable pressure relief either. It felt just too firm for side sleeping, resulting in noticeable pressure build-up on my hips and shoulders. A situation sure to lead to aches and discomfort over time and certainly did in the short period of our in-store testing.
The mattress also seemed to sleep hot, despite the Tencel cover and the supposedly cooling Eco fibres. A night's sleep interrupted by heat-induced discomfort is an experience we could all do without.
Suitability
This firm mattress could potentially cater to back sleepers and some stomach sleepers who crave firm underlying support. However, side sleepers or those with a desire for a softer, more yielding sleeping surface may find this mattress a hard taskmaster. Likewise, sleepers with a curvier figure may not find the reclining comfort they seek due to the absence of that much-needed sinkage in the support layer as with other mattresses.
What Customers Thought
Customer reviews of the Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress paint a varied picture. Some sleepers found solace in its firmness, whereas others experienced discomfort due to the lack of responsiveness and cushioning. Many mirrored my own sentiments and concerns about the heat regulation of the mattress, with claims of it making them hot during the night too.
The Verdict
So, where does this lead us in our assessment of the Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress? In all fairness, it isn't a mattress that completely misses the mark. For a select group, primarily back sleepers who crave firm, unyielding support, this could potentially be a worthy consideration. However, for a broad spectrum of users, especially side sleepers, those with curvier figures, or anyone in pursuit of a mattress with versatility and broader appeal, this might not hit the spot.
The features that sound appealing in theory—the system of 782 Miracoil® springs, the Eco Comfort Fibres™ layer, the Tencel cover—failed to deliver a comfortable sleeping experience in real-time testing. The firmness was jarring, the zoning didn't provide the expected pressure relief, and it still slept hot despite the purported cooling features.
Given its reasonable price tag, the Silentnight Luxe Ortho Support Firm Mattress might appeal to those looking for a firm, supportive sleeper on a budget. However, for optimum comfort and a more universally acceptable level of firmness, it may be worth extending your search to other products. Rest assured, finding your perfect mattress is a journey worth embarking on for the sweet reward of a restful night's sleep.
