Why our sleep experts loved it
I tried out the Lytham Memory Mattress for several weeks, sleeping on it almost every night. As the softer of two Lytham models, it's a good option for people who want the same build and quality but in a plusher, yielding style. I wanted to see whether the memory foam surface made this a genuinely soft and comfortable mattress, or whether its three-star rating meant a trade-off with longer-term support. Here's my verdict based on firsthand experience.
Delivery
The Lytham Memory Mattress was delivered neatly and professionally. The firm sent the mattress flat packed and full size, wrapped in clean recyclable packaging. The delivery team wore overshoes and gloves and carried the mattress into the room of my choice without dragging it across the floor. There was no messy unrolling, no waiting hours for it to expand or blowing up with a pump, and no strong chemical smell on opening. The surface stitching was even and tight, the sides of the mattress were perfectly even, and there were no dents or marks from transit. It was ready to sleep on within minutes of delivery, which I liked.
Unboxing
There is nothing here to get too excited about – and that is a good thing. You cut the plastic wrapping away and lift the mattress into place. It looks like a real mattress, not a squashed-up object that has been under pressure for months. The outer cover is a smooth soft fabric with a quilted texture that makes you feel it will be comfortable as soon as you lie down. The side handles are well made and well placed, so they're easy to grip for rotation – this mattress should be rotated rather than flipped. Once out of the box it sits low, just 22 cm high, so on a low bed frame it will look like a tight package. The initial impression is smart and positive but a little understated.
Construction
It is a fairly simple build but no random choices are included. The mattress has an open coil spring system at its core that gives the mattress its structure. The coils are interconnected which means the weight is distributed evenly across the surface rather than being directed into isolated sections. This means it feels more predictable, but also that movement is not well isolated. Above the coils there is a layer of responsive memory foam to mould to your body and relieve pressure points around shoulders, hips, and spine. The top surface is quilted with a soft stretch knit fabric that includes hypoallergenic fibres. The top layer is also treated with Pro-bio technology, a natural antibacterial coating to help reduce the presence of dust mites and minimise their effect. Around the perimeter there is a dynamic reinforced support which is a firmer edge that prevents roll-off and keeps the mattress stable when you sit on or sleep by the edge. Overall it is a neat, light build with a focus on being soft but with an eye to structural stability as well.
Comfort
This is where the Lytham Memory Mattress really gets its personality. It is soft, and noticeably softer than the Lytham Memory Support. I could feel my shoulders and hips sink into the mattress when I first lay down and the foam cushioned the impact well. There is an initial plushness that is very welcoming, and especially so after a long day. The memory foam smooths out the transition between your body and the spring base so that you do not feel individual coils. However, you still get a sense of the underlying bounce. For a lighter or average weight sleeper, it feels like this is relaxing but supportive in a soft, gentle way. For heavier users, the experience is different. After a few hours the softness allowed the heavier parts of my body to sink more deeply which in turn caused my lower back to lose its alignment. Side sleepers will be delighted with the pressure relief on their hips and shoulders, but back and stomach sleepers may find it too compliant. For my part, I found it very comfortable for short naps and sleeping on my side, but not as good for lying on my back for a long time.
Soft memory foam also has a slight lag in responsiveness. It takes a second or so for the foam to spring back into shape when you move or roll over. This mattress is not slow and lifeless like older dense foam mattresses, but it is not snappy either. If you like a mattress that pushes back against you quickly as you shift around, this will feel very relaxed and slow to respond. The comfort level is good for people who want a calm, cocooning feel rather than a lifted firm one.
Temperature regulation
Memory foam is always a bit warmer than firmer materials or more breathable mattresses. This is true of the Lytham Memory Mattress as well. The open coil base does help with airflow underneath, but the foam layer on top holds body heat. During the cooler weeks I found this pleasant, especially with a cotton sheet and a lighter duvet. On a warm night, body heat built up against my body much faster than I like. The quilted top with its breathable fibres did help, but it could not fully compensate for the natural warmth of memory foam. If you are a naturally cool sleeper this mattress will feel cosy. If you are a warm sleeper or live in a well-insulated house, you will probably find it a touch too close for comfort. I opened a window a little at night and that balanced things out well enough. In terms of temperature, I would rate it a comfortable mattress for cooler months and a fair mattress for summer.
Motion transfer
An open coil design also results in a slight bounce to this mattress and therefore some motion transfer. If one person rolls over or gets in and out of bed, the other can feel a mild ripple. This is not disruptive unless your partner is constantly moving, but it is noticeable. The memory foam layer absorbs some of the motion and stops it from being too sharp. The coil system also means that you can never have complete isolation. For solo sleepers or couples who do not move around much, it is fine. For light sleepers who share the bed, you can expect to feel a little motion but not enough to ruin the night.
Edge support
The reinforced edge is one of the best features of this mattress. Sitting on the edge when putting on shoes or sitting at the end of the bed feels stable, and lying near the side does not give you a sinking feeling as if you might roll off. The foam compresses a little, but the firmer edge beneath holds its shape. Compared to cheap all-foam mattresses, it is a big step up in edge stability. The reinforcement also helps with longevity by reducing compression in the perimeter of the mattress, which can be a weak point on softer mattresses. It also gives the whole mattress a tidier, more finished look and helps it to stay more even as it is rotated over time.
Everyday use
After several weeks of normal use, the mattress has maintained its general shape very well. The top foam layer had softened slightly after the first week which made it even more comfortable to lie on. The underlying support had not changed. There were no dips or ridges forming, and rotation was easy because of the side handles and light weight. The quilted surface was still smooth and the stitching looked like it would hold up for a long time. It is not a heavy-duty mattress, but for moderate use or a lighter sleeper, it is performing reliably. I would not expect it to last as long as a high-end hybrid, but in this price range it is holding up its end of the bargain. It is also very easy to move for cleaning or rotation, which makes the maintenance simple compared to deeper, heavier mattresses.
Who this mattress suits
Lytham Memory Mattress is well suited to side sleepers, and lighter adults who prefer a soft surface that gives under the body and relieves pressure. It also suits people who sleep cold or prefer a cosy feel to their bed rather than a cool one. If you like to feel cradled by your bed rather than held on top of it, this mattress will appeal to you. It also makes sense as a mattress for guest rooms, children, or teenagers who are still growing and who benefit from a softer surface. For couples of a similar build who both like soft comfort, it can be a good choice as well. It is easy to handle, low profile, and a very sensible budget choice for anyone who wants a simple mattress that feels kind as soon as you touch it.
Who it does not suit
It will not suit anyone who needs firmer support for their back, or for people who tend to overheat at night. The softness means that heavier users will sink deeper into the mattress, which can cause discomfort in lower back over time. Stomach sleepers may also find that their hips drop too far, putting pressure on the spine. For people who like a lifted, supportive feel, this will seem too yielding. It also is not ideal for couples where one partner is much heavier than the other, since an open coil design will transfer motion from one side of the mattress to the other. If you are expecting long-term durability or performance closer to a pocket spring mattress, you will not find it here. This is a soft, value-focused mattress designed to be comfortable, not to offer pinpoint support.
Care and maintenance
This is a no-turn mattress, so it must be rotated regularly. Turn head to toe once a month for the first three months, then once every two to three months thereafter. Use the side handles for this. It is essential to use a breathable mattress protector from day one for hygiene and in order to remain eligible for the comfort guarantee. The cover is not removable, so keeping it clean and dry is important. Allow the mattress to air for a short time in the morning before making the bed to dissipate any trapped heat or moisture. Because it is lightweight, all of these steps are easy to manage, and will prolong the life of the mattress considerably.
Verdict
The Lytham Memory Mattress is a soft, gentle, comfortable, and easy-going mattress that offers honest softness at a fair price. It is built to please people who like a plush surface and a cozy night's sleep, not those who need solid structure or a cool bed. The open coil and foam combination works better than I expected for pressure relief, particularly for lighter users, but its softness and heat retain limits its appeal for others. It is a genuine step down in firmness and overall stability compared to the Lytham Memory Support and that is by design. The difference is clear. The Support version has firmer tension and a little more resilience while this mattress focuses on immediate softness and comfort.
For side sleepers, for light to medium-weight adults, or for anyone wanting a softer, budget-friendly mattress, the Lytham Memory Mattress comes with an easy recommendation. For heavier sleepers, hot sleepers, or anyone with back issues, it will likely be too soft. It is not a long-term investment piece, but as an affordable and comfortable mattress for the right sleeper it performs exactly as described. It is friendly, warm, and forgiving, just make sure that softness is what you actually want before you commit to it.
