Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Hyder Backcare Ultimate 3000 Mattress over at Mattress Next Day, as I've been looking forward to seeing what Hyder are doing with a proper backcare style build.
The mattress is made from a combination of deep luxurious wool and pocket springs, which is designed to give the highest level of comfort and support. Running my hand across the wool layer, it felt dense and springy rather than that thin, token 'wool' you sometimes get at this price point.
The mattress is also made in the UK by expert master craftsman so you can be assured of that British quality we all know and love. That said, I'd still want to see the finer details clearly listed, things like the depth of the wool and whether it's tufted, because those are the bits that usually decide how well it holds up over time.
The Hyder Backcare Ultimate 3000 Mattress is designed to be a mattress that can be used by those in need of a firmer tension, typically those of a heavier variety or those with back/neck pain that requires a firmer support layer. Lying on it on my back, it kept my hips nicely level and I didn't get that 'hammock' dip you can feel on softer hybrids.
On my side though, I could feel more pressure building around the shoulder than I'd want, so if you're a lighter side sleeper this is likely going to feel too firm. It's also the sort of tension where you might need a decent pillow setup, otherwise your neck can feel a bit out of line.
The mattress features 3000 pocket springs which have a top layer of deep and breathable wool which is designed to provide the best possible comfort and support for the sleeper and ideal for those who suffer from allergies. When I pressed down with my palm, you could feel the pocket springs responding individually rather than the whole surface moving as one, and that helps a lot with support. It also offers a very high level of bounce thanks to its pocket springs and makes it very comfortable when laying on your front or back. Those looking for a side sleeper mattress may want to consider a slightly softer support layer. One thing to be aware of, that bounce is great for changing position, but it can mean you notice a partner moving about more than you would on a slower, foamier mattress.
Hyder Backcare Ultimate 3000 Mattress has also been made with the full support of the National Bed Federation, whose stringent guidelines ensure a sufficient and quality product for consumers.
For me personally, this sits in the 'good for the right person' bracket. If you want a firmer, supportive feel with a more natural top layer, it's a solid shout, but if you're mainly a side sleeper or you like that sink-in, memory foam hug, I'd keep looking.
