Tests & Verdict

Here we collect tests, guides and product reviews so that you can create a picture of what others think about the product. This analysis and review is based on my experience and 12+ years of industry insight.

Great price point that makes it one of the lowest priced pocket spring mattresses we've ever reviews.

Pocket springs are a great support layer that outperform other support systems.

Plenty of legitimate good long term reviews.

Stock in all major sizes at time of writing.

Limited sizing alienates those looking for a small-single European size, or those after a super king. A shame because I feel these could have a large enough market that could have benefitted from this.

Why our sleep experts loved it

You might not have heard much about Coolflex in the past, what with all the marketing generally geared toward the big bed in a box manufacturers like Emma and Nectar etc. That said, there's a genuine market for the Essentials from Coolflex that might leave you wondering why you need to pay 3-4x the price for something else. Good quality pocket springs in a rolled mattress that has savings passed on to the consumer from storage and logistical efficiency, what's not to love about that? Let's find out.

Onto suitability and with a medium tension you could say that the Coolflex Essentials™ Pocket Mattress will suit most people of average build who are all-round mixed sleepers. Thanks to its soft-enough to roll and firm-enough to support the back and neck, this mattress does tend to punch well above its weight into the mid-range above.

For those that are heavier, you may want to consider a firmer mattress with strong edge support and roll together prevention. While the Coolflex Essentials™ Pocket Mattress with its good quality pocket springs may suit those in need, it is unlikely to give the support necessary to heavier predominantly back sleepers.

This product sits firmly in the lower end of the spectrum from a costs perspective but surprisingly delivers a pocket spring base layer accompanied by a reflex foam upper that won't have the same rebound properties as memory foam, but will still offer much of the same comfort that foam can provide. The result is a product that pushes toward the mid-range without the heavy costs typically associated.

Onto the firmness rating of the product and there are no complaints from the hundreds of reviews that have come in when it comes to the tension, coming in at around a 6 out of 10 (where 10 is the firmest). This means it is keenly placed in the medium tension for feel and will have great suitability for back, stomach and side sleeping.

As mentioned previously, customer feedback is strong with over 150+ reviews, some of which are long-term, all favouring this product. To date the most common positives appear to be around the great comfort and "excellent value", both of which come at one of the lowest price points we have seen for a pocket spring mattress. Those unhappier with the mattress would have preferred a firmer base layer as a result but many reflect on being miss-guided as to what a medium would actually feel like. Surprisingly for the price point, this mattress also comes with an impressive 5 year guarantee which will cover much of the expected lifespan for such a product helping showcase further the impressive value.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

Arrived well packaged, was suction packed and rolled as most are these days. I left it to air for 48 hours as recommended on the website, however the included instructions said 24 hours was enough? the spring indents were visable through the padding untill day 2. These are now not visable, there is no side wall padding on this mattress unlike on the mattress breakdowns pics on the site.. Its classed as medium firmness but I would say more firm, good quality workmanship. I may end up getting a foam topper in a few weeks as i'm a side sleeper and I dont feel it has enough foam depth on top to support my hips with this firmness. Overall a good value, quality mattress for the price. I'm 5ft 3, 11 stone, age 46. Bought double size mattress, comfort 800.

Nice mattress, impressed with the quality for the money. The top is nice and soft to touch and very comfortable. Have slept well the past 2 nights we've had it. My fitbit tracks my sleep and I usually struggle to fall into deep sleep for long, managing average of 50 minutes a night of deep sleep over the past 2 months of me tracking it. First night on this mattress I acquired 1hr 20min of deep sleep and 1 hr 15 the next. Of course its early days but i'm excited by this improvement! would definitely recommend.

This was such a brilliant choice that we ordered a second one for the share room two days later. Really comfortable mattress. It has a soft topping but the mattress is firm but most comfortable. It arrives vacuum packed flat and rolled, when you break the seal it reverts to normal size, you leave for 48 hours before use. Its a great mattress and we highly recommend. The whole process was so easy and successful. We will certainly use this company again.

Delivered in a box rolled up. After opening the box faced with a tightly rolled mattress. There was a small plastic cutter taped to the roll ideal for opening the plastic. After cutting it open we left the mattress to grow. The first night we had a mattress that hugged us but was medium/firm when settling down. Delighted with our mattress thank you

This is a very supportive mattress which distributes weight/support very well. The memory foam definitely moulds to your body, but less so than I was expecting. I would describe it as a firm mattress rather than medium/comfort. To increase the comfort factor i'm going to buy a mattress topper. Nb I weigh 10stone and sleep alone.

After unpacking the mattress was left toself inflate for two days from the vacuum packing method used in the transportingof the mattress, it has inflated and is quite firm but the sides could of beenbetter supported as when sitting on the edge of mattress it compresses quickly to the fact you feel your going to slide off

It has very soft sides so unless sitting in the middle you will roll off. The middle is then hard. The service and delivery were good but unhappy with the product and would not recommend it.
