Why our sleep experts loved it
The Ortho Memory Foam Mattress gave me the same concern in store that the specification creates on paper: it talks about memory foam, EcoFoam and firm reflex foam, yet never says how deep the actual memory foam layer is. For a foam mattress, that missing number matters. It is the difference between proper surface cushioning and a thin comfort skin over a firm base.
I did not hate it. I also would not buy it blind without accepting what it is: a cheap, firm, slim rolled mattress that feels better than a plain reflex foam block, while still exposing its budget roots quite quickly under body weight. Short version: useful for the right person, poorly explained by the spec.
Construction and practical details
Materials are listed as EcoFoam, memory foam and firm reflex foam. The support pitch is familiar: spinal alignment, orthopaedic support, pressure relief, no roll together and no need to turn. In person, the firm reflex base was the dominant part of the feel. The top had a little cushioning, then the mattress firmed up fast. That is why the unlabelled memory foam depth bothers me; the showroom feel suggested a shallow layer.
The removable soft knitted cover is machine washable, and that is genuinely useful on a lower-cost mattress where people may not want to spend much extra. Hypoallergenic, vegan friendly, made in the UK, Source 5 fire resistance and National Bed Federation approval all help the tick-box case. The tree-planting claim is pleasant enough. None of it tells me whether the comfort layer is generous. It did not feel generous.
Feel and support in store
Firm is the main word here. Pressing a hand into the surface gave a quick dip, then resistance. Lying on my back felt tidier than expected for the money, as the pelvis stayed reasonably level and the mattress did not sag through the centre. That is the good bit.
Move onto a shoulder and hip, and the limitations show. There was not much space for the body to settle before the firmer foam took over. The brand can call it pressure relieving, yet side comfort depends on depth as well as material name. A sliver of memory foam will never behave like a proper comfort section.
Compared with the Silentnight Just Breathe Eco Comfort Hybrid, this Ortho model feels plainer and firmer through the top. The Silentnight has a livelier layered feel in the shop; this is a simpler foam slab with a softer cap. Different budgets, yes. Still a useful comparison.
Heat is the part I could not prove from a showroom test. Memory foam often behaves differently across a full night, especially in warm weather, and a few minutes on the shop floor will not reveal that.
Who should consider it
Back sleepers are the safest match. A firm surface often works well for people who stay flat through the night and dislike sink. Some stomach sleepers may also find the tension helpful, as it keeps the midsection from dropping too far.
Side sleepers should be cautious. Curvier side sleepers may feel the hip and shoulder pressing into the firmer support section too quickly. I would be especially wary for anyone who already wakes with shoulder soreness. Worth a proper lie-down before buying.
The “orthopaedic” label should not be treated as medical magic. In this case it means a firm, supportive feel. That may help some backs. It may also feel harsh.
Owner feedback and where it fits
Customer comments are mostly upbeat. People mention great value, timely delivery, speedy service and helpful delivery men. One buyer described it as “a little too firm” while saying their back felt better and sleep quality improved. That review rings true from what I felt in store: the mattress has a decent firm support story, provided the sleeper suits it.
The short praise such as “so comfy” and “excellent mattress” should be read with the price bracket in mind. Many budget mattress reviews are written after replacing something worn out. Improvement over an old bed is useful evidence, although it does not answer the construction question.
Final call
Knock another £30 off and get it under £200, and I would endorse it more strongly as a back-sleeper bargain. At a higher figure, I would also look at a clearer budget foam option from IKEA, or stretch to an entry Silentnight hybrid for a deeper, more layered feel.
The Ortho Memory Foam Mattress is not a scammy product. It is simply thinner and less transparent than I would like for a main bed, and the missing memory foam depth is the detail I kept coming back to after leaving the showroom.
