Why Our Sleep Experts Loved It

becky says

The Staples & Co Artisan Superior range is a luxurious collection of mattresses made from natural and recycled materials, which means that each mattress is kind to your body and the environment. It's not only the world that benefits from these mattresses but you as well; they're naturally breathable, and you get the benefits of a better night’s sleep too.

Unpacking the different layers within this deep mattress we first come across the comfort layer which sits at the top layer and is the primary point of contact between your body and the base layer below. This layer is made up of natural & organic fibres which have been blended to create deep and luxurious comfort that is both environmentally friendly while also being both breathable and soft making it a fantastic choice for back and side sleepers alike.

Onto the support layer and you get a double helping in the form of high quality pocket springs paired off with an additional layer of micro pocket springs. These units work hand-in-hand to give more precise body contouring and zonal support with the higher the number largely dictating the quality on offer (to a point).

Tension is a free-for-all with offerings available that include soft, medium and firm. If you are a primarily side sleeper with wide hips and an hourglass frame there could be an argument for the soft but we generally find most people will suit the medium tension. Finally there is the firm which offers more orthopaedic-like support that will satisfy those who desire additional back and neck support while they sleep.

Ultimately the Artisan Superior mattress (regardless of which tension you find suitable) is a great investment for anyone who wants a natural, eco-friendly alternative to traditional mattresses and who wants to sleep better than ever before. With their quality, and the commitment to high quality at a reasonable price point, the barrier for entry into the luxurious mattress segment has never been lower.

Reasons to Buy

While still arguably a lot of money, the Artisan Superior is at a price point that will appeal to many looking for a luxury mattress.

The 10 year guarantee shows that the manufacturer will stand behind this product.

Hypoallergenic materials will ensure you suffer as little as possible when it comes to allergies.

Pillow tops can be divisive but ultimately offer you another layer of comfort which many regard as a good thing provided proper maintenance and rotation in line with manufacturer guidelines is observed.

Reasons to Avoid

Price point will alienate a large portion of the public.

The bespoke handmade nature of this mattress means that lead times are particularly long.

Blended natural fillings are great but with no percentage inclusion of what makes this up, we are somewhat left blind to the exact make-up within the mattress.

Micro springs probably do very little in this mattress, you could argue it could have been made slightly cheaper with the exclusion and nobody would have really noticed.

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

  • Breathability
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

  • Initial Odour
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

What Makes The Staples and Co Artisan Superior Mattress Great?

A total of 5000 premium pocketed springs & mini pocket springs provide the perfect foundation, individual support, and a durable, consistent sleep surface

Pocket springs are a type of mattress spring that is individually wrapped in its own fabric pocket. This allows each spring to move independently from the others, providing more targeted support and pressure relief. Pocket springs also tend to be more durable than other types of mattress springs, making them a good choice for people who are looking for a long-lasting mattress.

Posture-Plus edge support system to maximise the sleep surface & helps to extend the life of the mattress

A posture plus edge system occurs where additional firm springs are placed along all edges of the mattress to make for a firmer edge that gives you a full edge-to-edge nights sleep that also gives great support that when sitting on the end of the product.

Natural & organic fibres are blended to create luxury filling layers, most certified by the Global Organic textile standard

Blended fibres are a common comfort layer that sits in the top of the mattress and delivers increased comfort that has been endorsed by the GOTS, the leading organic textile standard.

Organic Wool and cotton fibres, great for temperature regulation and breathability

Wool is a great option for the comfort layer of mattresses for a number of reasons. First, it is breathable enough to allow air to flow sufficiently to ensure great all-season long cooling that won't have you too hot, or too cold. Additional to this you have other advantages like durability, flexibility, flame and water resistance. Ultimately wool is a sustainable and renewable option that is environmentally friendly and supremely comfortable.

Blend of GOTS approved Organic Cotton, Hemp & Flax fibres

The cotton and hemp fibers are both strong and durable, while the flax adds a touch of softness and comfort. This combination makes for a mattress that is both supportive and comfortable, and that will last for many years.

UK Alpaca wool is hypoallergenic and ultra-soft

Sourced from the UK, this Alpaca Wool is stronger and lighter than wool while being more resilient and harder wearing. All of this means a more durable mattress that should last longer than equivalent models  utilising different comfort layers.

Organic silk fibres provide luxurious comfort

You know what is more comfortable than luxurious silk fibres? Us neither, this material is especially soft and makes for plenty of additional comfort. The silk fibres are naturally organic and are created without the use of chemicals or treatments.

Pillowtop layer offers sumptuous comfort

Pillow top's operate as an additional secured layer that gives further comfort at the cost of having an unremovable layer that mimics many of the properties of a traditional mattress topper. The pillow top can be somewhat divisive as some prefer a simple topper for additional versatility. Regardless though, a well maintained pillow top will give additional softness with reasonable settlement that should make for a deeper and more comfortable nights sleep.

Hand tufted for a firmer, supportive feel

There are a few benefits to hand tufting, namely that the procedure creates a more uniform comfort and feel while also increasing overall support. Further to this hand tufting reduces bounce slightly creating a more predictable sleep surface that increases durability.

Easy care - non-turn mattress

Non turn mattresses have a few benefits, most importantly that they do not need to be flipped, saving time effort and energy that can be better focussed toward getting a good nights sleep. Do be aware however that you should still be rotating your mattress in line with the manufacturers guidelines for the product.

Customer Reviews For The Staples and Co Artisan Superior Mattress

Staples & co Artisan Superior Mattress - Soft - very comfortable, looks expensive and well made. Worth every penny. Not sure I'd class it as soft as it feels quite supportive more like soft to medium but it feels very comfortable and I've slept well ever since I've had it.
