Tests & Verdict

Here we collect tests, guides and product reviews so that you can create a picture of what others think about the product. This analysis and review is based on my experience and 12+ years of industry insight.

The Hyde & Sleep is Dreams' answer to the rise of Simba and Eve and performs amicably in these areas. The Emerald is particularly firm which makes it ideal for those looking for orthopaedic-style support.

Breath-ability is better than expected from the materials utilised thanks to clever air flow zoning which I've personally trialed in a couple of stores now with great success.

Not conforming to the rotation schedule has resulted in some customers unhappy with uneven settlement. This is a very common problem with foam topped mattresses and one that is easily avoided in the majority of cases by conforming to the aforementioned rotation schedule.

Why our sleep experts loved it

Featuring Next-Gen memory foam, Hyde & Sleeps Emerald Air Hybrid mattress has a lot to offer. From a memory foam top, foam base, spring hybrid and more, this is one not to be missed. There are plenty of people that are in need of a firmer and more orthopaedic style of support and that is where this product really shines. There are many mattresses in the firmer tension segment, but what makes this one stand out? let's dive in.

Let's start with who this type of mattress is for. This type of product is considered fairly specialist due to it's tension and as such will suit those looking for a board-like support structure beneath them that will help alleviate aches and pains commonly within the back and neck. We generally recommend this type of tension for those looking specifically for orthopaedic style support which offers much more support over typical mattresses found elsewhere.

So who is this product not suitable for? Honestly, the average person who sleeps on their side is unlikely to derive any serious comfort from this mattress, it's typically not going to be compatible unless you are of a heavier weight. This is because firm mattresses do not have as much sinkage which in turn means that areas of your body that would typically stick out, like your shoulder or hip, won't sink sufficiently into the mattress when sleeping on your side. As such, the average side sleeper should consider a different product in the range.

But what of the specifics? Mattresses are typically broke into two key areas, these are the support layer at the bottom and the comfort layer at the top. We've broken these down below:

To start, the support layer. The support layer on this mattress is a hybrid, that means it is a combination of both base foam and pocket springs. The pocket springs are smaller and sit above the foam layer giving enough support for full body contouring while making them small enough to be compacted easily in the roll-up offer of the mattress.

Onto the comfort layer and this mattress comes with a thick layer of premium memory foam wrapped in a luxurious and breathable cover. Memory foam continues to be one of the most desirable comfort layers that you can get and with the breathable cover included in this product, you won't find yourself getting too hot.

Made in the UK, this is an award winning mattress from one of the most popular bed manufacturers in the country, selling exclusively to the largest bed retailer, Dreams.

Reviews for this mattress are impressive. amassing an incredible 800+ reviews at time of writing and a strong 89% customer satisfaction. As is typical with online ordering, many of the negative comments related to the tension of the product, appearing to be too firm for many that purchased, perhaps unaware of the level of tension they were getting. Remember, this is a firm mattress and serves a specific use case whereby you should be considering only if you are a front/back sleeper of moderate or higher BMI for which this will surely impress. Positive reviews are plentiful and include many remarks around the comfort and back pain prevention through orthopaedic support. It's a fantastic buy and worth consideration.

So what do we like about this product? It's fit for purpose and features high quality materials that do the job spectacularly. I really rate Hyde & Sleep for their great quality and they consistently perform above and beyond expectation. There are caveats to our praise here, it's suitability is narrow and you should definitely consider if the firmer tension is going to be right for you, however, if indeed you are in need of more support this mattress could be the answer.

I am 37 and suffer with chronic pain conditions including a spinal injury, severe fibromyalgia throughout my body and arthritis in some parts. I knew I wanted a sprung mattress with memory foam, firm support and none of those uncomfortable buttons all over the top and had ordered 2 mattresses online that claimed to have the features I wanted but in real life they didn't do the job so I decided I needed to actually lie on a mattress before spending any money. The tester bed in Dreams Stafford gave a result which completely matched my own perceived requirements for comfort. This Hyde and Sleep Raspberry mattress was on the list of recommendations, within the price I deemed reasonable for my requirements given my disabilities and the inevitable extra time I have to spend in bed. After testing a few others I kept coming back to this one. I am delighted with my purchase, it took a few nights for my body to adjust, having slept on inadequate mattresses for over a year. My back stopped feeling tender in some places and the memory foam is noticeably quicker to return from the shape and weight of my body when I get out of bed. I love it, it is everything I had in my mind that I wanted, the additional guarantee and insurance offered in store was a no brainer. I can thoroughly recommend this mattress if you are looking for firm with no buttons, and especially if you are disabled due to pain in multiple regions of your body.

My girlfriend and I brought ourselves a new mattress as our Christmas present to each other. Previously, we had quite an old sprung mattress and I was sleeping intermittently for about half an hour at a time. We went on the Sleep Match, which was brilliant, as it took into consideration my rugby injuries and "additional" weight. This matched up our support needs and Bev, the sales lady showed us which mattresses matched our needs. We were expecting to be shown the most expensive in the range, but no, we were given a choice of reasonably priced mattresses with varying firm/softness. We chose the raspberry as it was exactly what we needed and were able to take it home that day. Bev was excellent and looked after us really well. You have customers for life because of her! The sleep is excellent and I now sleep through the night with no discomfort and without waking. The mattress is incredibly comfortable and I couldn't recommend it enough.

We have had the bed for a three weeks and so far it is very comfortable and no problems so far the only issue we had which the company have been superb was when un wrapping the bed the mattress had a spit in it I think it was accidentally done by the guys and within half hour I had a call and the brand new bed is being delivered tomorrow so no complaints there we used the bed simulator in store and this type of bed was recommended and I have to say we are sleeping very well on it getting off the sides don't seem as stable so we never try to sit on the edge but in fairness you shouldn't do this anyway but the whole process was excellent the salesman was superb and gave us really good advice and we are very happy so far like a say it's only been a few weeks but really am very happy with the mattress.

After using the sleepmatch machine it indicated we needed a medium to firm mattress. After trying a large range of mattresses from the cheapest to the dearest we went for the Hyde and Sleep Hybrid Raspberry with the sleepmotion 200i. The mattress is rated as firm and firm definitely means firm although I'm sure its firmer than in the shop. Having slept on it for 2 weeks we're still not sure it's the mattress for us cause at times we are finding it a little uncomfortable. On the up side the mattress didn't smell or agitate my existing lower back problem which other reviews have highlighted. Another two weeks to make our minds up, time will tell if we need to change for a slightly softer mattress. I would recommend this item to anyone wanting a firm mattress

We purchased this mattress to replace the pocket sprung mattress on our divan. Despite being in excellent visual condition, our old mattress was starting to cause me hip and leg pains each morning. This new hyde and sleep hybrid mattress was a perfect compromise for us: it gives the firm support we wanted but it has a softer surface which moulds to the body. We have been delighted with it -and no more leg or hip pains. If you've always had pocket sprung divans in the past, then give this a go. We couldn't be happier. There's only one slight improvemement I would make and that is, put handles on each side to make rotation easier. However, It is MUCH lighter than our previous mattress, so the absence of handles wouldn't prevent us from buying another one.

The staff in the Burnley store were very easy to talk too and really give you the chance to try out each mattress. As so as we laid down this Hybrid mattress I know it was the right one. It was so lovely to relax on, fall asleep on and easy to get up and down from. The mattress was ready to take and with it being all wrap up and ready to go, we took the opportunity to take it there and then. Instructions were to leave the mattress for a good few hours to settle and raise to its form and it did this within a reasonable time. The softness of the mattress really makes you want to just lie on it and not get back up. We have not looked back since buying our mattress, there is not the noise of springs anymore, just sound sleepness from us both....:)

Prior to purchasing this mattress i bought two of the Emma Premiums and they both arrived with damaged corners. The replacements had the same issue so clearly this is a packaging fault. The staff at Dreams were great and very patient with our 2 year old trying to escape at any given opportunity. The mattress itself appears of a much higher quality than the price suggests, very supportive, comfortable and bounces right back into shape as soon as you're off it. Delivery was swift and the guys very professional, ensuringbthey caused no damage bringing the mattress to the correct room. The only down side is that after 3 weeks the mattress still gives off a strong smell, I like to think this is slowly going but to be honest, I'm not convinced.

I bought this product a while ago because my was hurting. My old mattress was old and lumpy, although I had a foam topper which made it bearable. The raspberry is a mid range pocket spring/ foam firm mattress. It provides a good level of comfort without paying thousands of pounds. Its top layer is squishy and the bottom is supportive. My favourite thing about it is if my partner gets up in the middle of the night, the whole mattress doesnt move, meaning I dont get disturbed. My least favourite thing is the thickness makes it difficult to stretch a fitted sheet across. That said, its such a minor thing that I dont think it matters. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is put off by tempur prices. 5 Stars all round.

Ive had this mattress for approximately two weeks now and its so comfortable. My sleep has improved so much. I was slightly unsure if a firm mattress would be for me but its perfectly supportive and not too hard. Dreams allowed us to use their bed match system which picked this and a number of others for us but it was definitely our favourite. One of the things that has truly impressed us is that one one of us gets out of bed there is no motion transfer to the other side. I would definitely recommend this mattress. The delivery and assistance In store was also fantastic. The delivery arrived on time and the delivery staff were efficient and polite. Really impressed by the overall service at dreams.

Although immediately incredibly comfortable I've given 3 stars because: arrived with damage to outer plastic packaging and marks on the mattress. Exchange agreed without trouble however we've only just (after 4weeks) completely got rid of the chemical smell that is a feature of memory foam mattresses. Exchange arrives in a couple of days and so we'll have to go through the whole process again. There are signs that the current mattress is beginning to 'give' in the middle. It's now less firm compared to the outer areas subjected less to the weight of us sleeping. Hope this doesn't crop up with the replacement and that our 100 nights starts again when it arrives so if it does we can seek a better alternative.

Spent ages trying to pick a mattress in shops and online. Eventually made it to Dreams in Sheffield and that made the difference for us. We had a go on their fancy posture measuring bed device, which gave us a handful of recommendations, which we tried all of, several times, before settling on this (pun intended). We chose very firm, and when it arrived (great delivery service too) it felt like a rock, but as we laid down on it we got just the level of comfort we wanted. I'm normally a fidgety sleeper but since having this mattress I find I wake up in the same position as I go to sleep in. Highly recommend if you like a firm mattress (also available in other firmnesses)

Hello, sorry this is probably a silly question but what exactly is a hybrid mattress? And how does it compare to memory foam that gets rather hot?

Answer: Combination mattresses, also known as hybrid mattresses, blend the stability of pocket or open springs with the luxury of a memory foam, latex or gel layer. These mattresses can therefore offer both support and a plush level of comfort. As a hybrid mattress can still contain memory foam, how your body reacts to memory foam could still be a factor if you feel you are overheating or not. Many thanks

Whats the difference between standard mattress and rolled ?

Answer: The only difference is that the standard mattress will be delivered flat and the rolled mattress will be delivered rolled. We recommend ordering the rolled mattress if you have a particularly narrow or spiral staircase or if the room where the mattress will be placed is hard to access.

Hi there - I am wondering what type of mattress protector to order for this mattress? I don't want a padded topper as that will counteract the memory foam, just a protector, are any of the ones you sell OK?

Answer: Any of the mattress protectors we sell will be suitable for this mattress. There isn't a specific mattress protector required for this mattress, it would depend on personal preference.
