Why Our Sleep Experts Loved It

becky says

When you are looking for a mattress that offers exceptional comfort, support, and durability, you could do a lot worse than considering the Hypnos Elite Luxury mattress. This is a limited edition mattress from Hypnos, one of the world's leading bed makers and a Royal Warrant holder since 1929 and sold exclusively through MattressNextDay. Hypnos mattresses are handmade in Britain using natural and sustainable materials, and are designed to provide a restful and rejuvenating sleep experience that works with a range of sleepers. In this review we are looking at the Hypnos Elite Luxury mattress to see what makes it stand out from other mattresses on the market in this price segment.

The support layer houses a medium-firm pocket sprung mattress that features a ReActivePro™ 7-turn spring system. This means that each spring has seven active turns, allowing it to respond independently to your body shape, weight, and movement as you move around the product. The result is a personalised support and pressure relief for every part of your body, as well as reduced motion transfer between partners.

The comfort layer also boasts a generous layer of natural fillings, including British wool, cotton, and solotex. These materials are breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating, creating a cosy and comfortable sleeping surface that will keep you cool regardless of the season. These materials are also hypoallergenic and anti-microbial which makes them ideal for allergy sufferers and sensitive skin.

More on that comfort and outer layer and the mattress is also finished with a softer and more durable damask cover that is hand-tufted to secure the fillings, preventing them from shifting or sagging over time. The cover also features two rows of hand side-stitching for enhanced edge support and durability with well-positioned handles for easy turning and vents for improved air circulation.

The Hypnos Elite Luxury mattress offers many benefits for different types of sleepers, such as:

Back and stomach sleepers: The medium-firm feel of the mattress better optimal spinal alignment and support for back and stomach sleepers, preventing lower back pain and stiffness.

Side sleepers: The pocket springs contour to the curves of your body and relieve pressure points on your hips and shoulders, ensuring a comfortable and pain-free sleep for side sleepers giving you the best of both worlds.

Hot sleepers: The natural fillings of the mattress help to regulate your body temperature and wick away moisture, keeping you cool and dry throughout the night while you sleep.

Couples: The pocket springs help isolate motion by reducing disturbance from your partner's movements, allowing you to sleep peacefully without interruptions regardless of how much your partner tosses and turns.

Eco-conscious shoppers: The mattress is made from natural and sustainable materials that are ethically sourced and carbon-neutral, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

When it comes to what customers think, they generally seem to have positive opinions about the Hypnos Elite Luxury Mattress describing it as “very comfortable” and “well made” with a “nice and supportive comfortable softer layer.” One customer mentioned that it is “supportive but not too firm” which suits them as a side sleeper and also suits their husband as a back sleeper. Other customers mentioned that they were looking for a bed to match the support and comfort of the premier inn mattress back when Hypnos made them and that this mattress fits the bill nicely.  Overall, customers seem to be satisfied with their purchase and have enjoyed a good night’s sleep on the Hypnos Elite Luxury Mattress.

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

What Makes The Hypnos Elite Luxury Mattress Great?

Each spring has seven turns for a bespoke response to weight and pressure

Naturally hypoallergenic and prevents dust mites

Hypoallergenic mattresses and bedding are both great options for preventing dust mites and having a hygienic nights sleep that consists of materials that are relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.

1,000 pocket springs for medium-firm support

Pocket springs are a type of mattress that uses individual springs that are each encased in their own fabric pocket. These springs are then attached to the mattress fabric, creating a supportive and comfortable sleeping surface. Pocket springs are often considered to be a step up from traditional coil springs, as they provide a more targeted level of support.

Natural materials from sustainable sources

Sustainably sourced materials are also better for the environment, as they are obtained from sources that are not depleted, and the production process does not harm the environment.

Resilient, durable, and keeps its shape

As you would expect from this brand, the materials utilised aim to keep the mattress durable for longer. This can be achieved by using good quality spring systems and enforcing processes like tufting.

We'll plant a tree with every order, to offset our CO2 footprint

Ecologi provides businesses with the ability to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees for every order. A feel good initiative for the consumer that helps protect the environment.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Natural Fillings

Pure and natural fillings are typically from animal or plant fibers. These can include: Wool, Cashmere, Hemp or Latex commonly.

Cotton

A cotton mattress cover of fairly good quality and often preferable to damask covers and weaved covers. Your preference will vary though.

ReActive™ 7-Turn Pocket Spring System

This is a popular support layer from the popular manufacturer Hypnos, the ReActive layer features springs that work independently allowing them to sense your shape and weight to provide unique and tailored support to your spine, neck and rest of your body.

28cm Depth

28cm of depth is a decent height for a mattress. Not too deep so as to require bespoke sheets, but not too thin that you are left questioning the quality of the product. This sort of depth leaves plenty of room for a deep comfort layer that pairs well with a good quality base layer.

Medium Firm Support

Medium Firm is a tension that ranks around 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Where 5 is considered the standard average firmness, a 7 is slightly firmer. This tension is still largely suitable for the vast majority of people, especially those that like sleeping on their back, or, suffer from back/neck pain that requires a firmer feel.

1200 Springs

Typically, the more springs the better. The average mattress has around 1000 springs and so anything more than that is considered good. The firmness/tension of a mattress is also not dictated by the amount of springs and so you do not need to worry about the firmness being unsuitable when it comes to spring count. Simply the more springs, the better the mattress can contour to your body. 1200 springs is considered good.

Damask cover

Damask is a fabric, woven in nature that is often used to upholster mattresses. It is typically made from linen or cotton and can typically be woven into delivate detailings required by the supplier. The fabrics are typically fairly hard wearing and should not cause problems

Air Vents

When you sleep you also sweat, when this happens it generally leaks into the mattress. Sounds a little gross but that is the way it works, no drama however as matresses are built to be breathable and air out any moisture buildup, the addition of air vents helps ensure this happens with peak efficiency

No Need To Turn

This means that the product does not need to be turned over, but make no mistake, that is not the same as saying a product does not need to be rotated. If you do not want dips in your mattress with time, be sure to rotate evenly every month where possible

No roll together

Specifically designed with roll together prevention in mind. This means the product likely has better quality internals and offers better support than other mattresses in the same price point.

Turning Handles

Have you ever tried rotating or flipping a mattress without handles? You have to do that weird thing where you use your head as a third arm as you sort of nudge it with your face. Take the handles as a blessing

Hand Side Stitched

Hand side stitching is a true mark of quality found in the upper-quality segment of mattresses. The process is very labor intensive as it involves attaching the side panel of the mattress to the pocket spring support layer found within a mattress helping to give better edge support and preventing roll-off.

Hand Tufted

A tufted mattress is often a sign of high quality, Unlike quilted mattress which binds the soft layer directly to the other layers, traditional tufting uses several thick straps to hold the layers together through the spring unit, binding it at each side.

NBF Approved Product

NBF stands for the National Bed Federation and is at the forefront of standards and legislation in the UK bed industry, these guys oversee the entire bedding industry with their mark and brand only being associated to those that follow a certain criteria of care and standards.

Made in the UK

These are made and manufactured in the UK, meaning that they all meet the same exceptional quality and durability that we expect from genuine UK manufacturing.
