Why our sleep experts loved it
I've been testing the Ray LED End Lift Ottoman Bed Frame for the past few weeks and it's one of those pieces that alters the character of a bedroom the moment it arrives. I got my hands on it at home rather than in a showroom, and I was genuinely curious whether the LED headboard would feel a bit 'gimmicky' in real life. The backlit headboard offers a gentle ambient glow which I found soothing in the evenings, and the silhouette is contemporary without being stark or clinical. This is an upholstered ottoman bed with an end-opening lift, so you're getting a bit of show and a lot of substance with this one, which is exactly what most small UK bedrooms need.
Design & Build
The Ray feels premium from the outset. Running my hand across the upholstery, it felt smooth and nicely finished, and the seams and corners looked tidy up close rather than just from a distance. The headboard is well cushioned and ever so slightly curved, softening the geometry while making it more comfortable to sit up and read compared to a flat panel. It's upholstered in a choice of fabrics and my Cloudy Grey swatch was smart, modern and muted. The base is ventilated so the underside of your mattress can breathe rather than being sealed into a solid box.
One thing I will say is the headboard is a bit of a dust magnet around the light line, so you will be giving it a quick wipe more often than you might expect. It's available in double, king and super king and is supplied with a long structural guarantee, which adds a welcome peace of mind over the lift mechanism and overall frame integrity.
Assembly & Setup
The Ray arrived very well packed in sensible sections. You'll need two adults to put this together, mostly to align the lift platform squarely and to carefully manage the gas struts. The instructions were very clear and the pre-drilled points lined up well, so there was very little persuasion required on the bolts. Once built the lift platform is solidly levelled and the headboard is tight with no give or wiggle. I would fix the frame in its final position when you're done as the ottoman section is heavy and awkward to shuffle around once fully constructed.
Also, allow more time than you think if you're building it in a tight room, I had to keep stepping around parts and it slows you down. If you're the sort that likes to re-position furniture every other weekend, this isn't that kind of frame once it's up.
Comfort & Practicality
Comfort isn't quite as obvious a concern with bed frames rather than sprung divans, but it still matters because the base affects the feel of a mattress. The ventilated platform gave a stable, even support with no ridges or flex so memory foam and hybrid mattresses in particular felt very even across the surface. When I pressed down with my hands across the middle and nearer the foot end, it stayed consistent, no hollow spots, no odd dips. That said, if you're used to a sprung slatted base with a bit of give, this will feel firmer and flatter under the same mattress, and that can catch some people out.
Sitting against the headboard was a highlight, too. The cushioning is thick enough to avoid the usual pressure points on shoulders and elbows, and the LED backlight adds a cosy wash of light that works well as an evening backdrop. There's no glare and I didn't notice any hotspots directly behind the pillow line, which suggests decent diffusion. The only niggle is that if you like to sit right up with a couple of pillows, the light can peek around the edges depending on how you stack them, not a deal breaker, just something I noticed.
Storage
This is where the Ray really earns its keep, and is also the main reason I bought it in the first place. The end-lift ottoman opens up to reveal a full-length storage cavity that spans the entire footprint, which swallowed spare bedding, winter jumpers and a couple of storage cubes without breaking a sweat. The hydraulic lift is well balanced, and stays put while you're loading.
With a mattress on board the lift remains smooth, though you do need to respect the stated maximum mattress weights (50 kg double, 65 kg king, 70 kg super king). If you're running a seriously chunky mattress, you can feel the lift get heavier and it stops being a one-hand job. This helps keep the action light and reduces undue strain on the gas struts over time.
Everyday Use
Daily living with the Ray has been uneventful and trouble-free. The lift mechanism felt robust and quiet, and I was able to access the storage without the frame creaking or racking. The upholstery has coped well with regular use. As with any pile fabric such as velvet, you should expect some shading in high-contact areas over time, so a light brush with the pile direction will help it look its best. I also liked that the headboard's gentle illumination made late-night trips feel less jarring than switching on a bedside lamp.
Value & Buying Notes
The Ray sits in that sweet spot where you are paying for considered design and useful engineering rather than gimmicks. The spec is sensible, from the cushioned backlit headboard to the practical end-lift ottoman with a properly ventilated base. Delivery is to room of choice and has a professional feel to it. As ever, assembly can be included on delivery with some items, but I would budget time to do it yourself if that's a requirement.
Price wise, you're definitely paying for the look and the storage, and if you don't need the ottoman function there are cheaper frames that do the job. I also would have liked a couple of proper fabric handles on the lift platform, as grabbing the end can feel a bit awkward depending on your mattress and bedding.
Who It Suits
If you want a modern upholstered bed with real storage capacity and a softer, more hotel-like aesthetic, the Ray is an excellent choice. It works especially well in flats or box rooms where losing a chest of drawers in favour of under-bed storage frees up floor space. Couples who like to sit up in bed will also appreciate the supportive headboard, and the ambient light makes a lovely evening scene if you prefer to wind down in low light before sleep.
Who It Does Not Suit
If you prefer the bounce of a sprung slatted base, or you are pairing it with an ultra-heavy, thick mattress that would exceed the lift limits, this is not the best match. The silhouette is modern and softly glamorous, so those chasing a rustic timber look or a very minimal, squared-off profile may not love the styling. Bedrooms with strong direct sunlight across the headboard may also be better served by a woven fabric rather than plush pile.
Final Verdict
The Ray LED End Lift Ottoman Bed Frame hits the fundamentals out of the park. It's stylish without being showy, the ottoman storage is genuinely useful and easy to access, and the cushioned backlit headboard makes the whole experience feel more considered. For me personally, it's a strong option if you actually need the storage and you like a firmer, flatter base under your mattress, but I wouldn't buy it just for the LED. After living with it for a few weeks I rate it highly for small to medium UK bedrooms where storage and atmosphere both matter. Choose the right mattress weight for your size, build it carefully with two people and you'll have a sturdy, practical bed frame that quietly lifts the room every night.
