The Johnstone Mattress is an upgraded model of one of The Dreams Workshop’s previous bestselling models, the Rapley Pocket Spring Mattress and is pitched as being ideal for side sleepers. For those unaware, The Dreams Workshop has been around a few years now and features some of the best and most well-reviewed mattresses within the Dreams retailers collection, being sold exclusively through the channel and with increasing consumer confidence.
Personally, we feel this mattress suitable for those looking for a firmer feel mattress that is able to offer sufficient support and comfort while still being a reasonably priced product.
The Johnstone Mattress ticks a lot of boxes for those looking for a bargain, to start, the mattress comes with 1000 pocket springs, a decent number to ensure contouring of the entire body when relaxing and sleeping, but also good quality pocket springs rather than poorer quality open coil mattresses. I personally rate pocket spring over other support layers and while there is a slight draw back on comfort layers, the support layer in this more than makes up for it. 1000 springs is a good amount for this layer also, offering more than enough body contouring and enough quality behind them to last the lifespan of the mattress.
This mattress should be rotated regularly in order to ensure even settlement of springs and even wear.
Reviews are very positive, amassing an impressive 1200+ reviews at time of writing with an incredible 96% in the consumer satisfaction survey which makes this one of the best mattresses in the entire lineup. Reviewers are particularly favourable of the comfort, with many starting to see the benefits of a proper pocket sprung mattress over the new rolled foam options entering the market. Reviewers also found the firmness rating of medium to be an accurate reflection of the tension within the mattress, making it the ideal choice for most people. Those who need a bit more support in the back and neck should look for something with a higher firmness rating, perhaps of medium-firm or higher, however this should largely suit most.
How does it feel?

Reasons to Buy
Pocket spring support layer at a keen price point.
Universal comfort with a medium tension that suits the vast majority of people.
A memory foam layer on top that protects you from the springs and is massively in demand right now, for good reason making this a fantastic all-rounder.
Reasons to Avoid
Memory foam isn't inherently breathable, this is offset slightly by the pocket spring layer which does breath quite well. The result if you might find you get a little warmer than previous which is great for those that sleep cold, but not so great news for those that sleep hot already as this may exacerbate further.
