Becky's Thoughts On The Flaxby Natures Finest 13400 Dual Season Mattress

The Flaxby Natures Finest 13400 Dual Season Mattress is a new offering exclusively handmade the the popular British manufacturer Harrison Spinks exclusively for Dreams. With 13500 pocket springs, this is probably one of the best specced mattresses I have ever come across.

To start, this mattress comes with 3 different types of pocket springs, Cortec™, DNA and DNAir. These all work together to prevent roll-together for couples sharing and also contour to the body in it's entirety offering even weight distribution and premium postural support.

The topper on this mattress, much like it's base, is most of luxurious quality, in this case, it comes with plentiful fillings of pure, natural fillings like Egyption cotton, wool, mohair and hemp, all of which bond together to create the ultimate sleep experience. I personally find the mix to be very comfortable and surprisingly breathable, allowing it to operate in both hot and cool climates.

What makes this mattress stand out in particular is the new double sided design that sees one side be cooler than the other. Hence the dual season branding. Once it gets to the summer months, simply flip the mattress to the cool side. In winter, flip back and enjoy the warmer side.

I love the ingenuity of this Flaxby Natures Finest 13400 Dual Season Mattress as it is one of the first I have ever see to offer different sleep experiences on each flip of the mattress. In practise you are able to stay either hot or cold which from a sheer practicality perspective saves nights sweating and sticking to your bed as you lay there dripping from head to toe. It turns out you really can put a price on that, and in this case, it's a price you no longer have to bare. This mattress does it all, and the cost is more reasonable than we expected. Sure, it's still a premium price product, but just look at what you get. I love it.

What Makes The Flaxby Natures Finest 13400 Dual Season Mattress Great?

Made in the UK

These are made and manufactured in the UK, meaning that they all meet the same exceptional quality and durability that we expect from genuine UK manufacturing.

Exclusively handmade by Harrison Spinks in the UK

Handcrafted in the UK to the highest standards by skilled bedmakers. These superior quality mattresses offer sustainable luxury using the finest natural fillings. They are 100% foam, glue and FR chemical-free, they product zero landfill and even the Cortec™ Quad springs are recyclable.

Comfort grade - soft or medium

A Medium firmness mattress is the most common build offered due to the range of suitability offered in such a mattress. This type of mattress will be better suited toward averagely weighted people, while lighter people should opt for a medium-light, and heavier people considering a medium-firm.

25cm depth

25cm depth is about average for a mattress, it leaves plenty of room for good quality fillings while still allowing you to fit a standard sheet over it.

5 year guarantee

A 5 year guarantee is quite rare in the industry and is a great indicator of the retailer beleiving in their product. Anything go wrong in the next 5 years, no drama, get it replaced.

Hand-tufted

Hand Tufting is a labor intensive process that involves securing the fittings to a mattress rather than having them operate independently and loose within. This small act not only secures, but also leads to the mattress lasting longer and feeling firmer. A hand-tufted mattress is great for anyone looking for additional stability while they sleep.

Depth: 25cm

Most experts recommend a minimum 10 inches, 4 inches on the top layer and 6 inches for the core so this size is an ideal balance of size and performance. Generally, the heavier the load the deeper the mattress should be.

Flaxby Care Guide

Flaxby offer care instructions to help get the most from your new addition. The instruction cover maintaining its appearance such as removing dirt and stains. It includes how to avoid damage from water and hot surfaces as well as actions to avoid like inadvertently removing fire-retardant coating. These instructions can come coupled with the warranty. It is important to follow the care instructions as not to void this warranty.

The Flaxby collection by Harrison Spinks is hand-built by British craftsmanship and made exclusively for Dreams. Their mattresses consist of a pocket spring core coupled with a layer of tightly grouped mini pocket springs to fully contour to your body, relieving pressure points and providing support. Their unique perforated sides push airflow towards the surface keeping the mattress well ventilated and the temperature regulated. Even the Flaxby collection bed bases contain 2000 pocket springs to provide additional support. Add the finishing touch with their hand-crafted headboards, pick from customisable designs in luxurious fabrics to match your divan.

Double sided - Turn regularly and rotate head to toe weekly for the first three months, then every month thereafter

A double sided mattress has the comfort layer on both sides with the support layer sandwiched in the middle. This setup allows you to both flip and rotate the mattress allowing you to benefit from twice the surface area of comfort, improve settlement of fillings and increase the longevity of the sleep area on the mattress. All great things.

Pure and natural fillings

Pure and natural fillings are typically from animal or plant fibers. These can include: Wool, Cashmere, Hemp or Latex commonly.

Exclusively handmade by Harrison Spinks

Harrison Spinks product mattresses that are handmade in Yorkshire. They are filled with quality, long-lasting and natural mattress fillings as a comfort layer and further enhanced  by innovative pocket springs as a support layer. Harrison Spinks mattresses are renowned worldwide for their quality.

Luxurious damask sleeping surface

A damask cover is a quilt or blanket that has a pattern of small, repeated designs. These small designs are usually made from blocks of color. A damask cover can be made from many different types of fabric, such as cotton, satin and silk. The patterns on the damask covers can be simple or elaborate. The patterns can be made up of one color or a variety of colors. The name “damask” comes from the city of Damascus in Syria. The first damasks were woven in this city.

Traditionally hand-tufted to keep fillings aligned

A tufted mattress is often a sign of high quality, Unlike quilted mattress which binds the soft layer directly to the other layers, traditional tufting uses several thick straps to hold the layers together through the spring unit, binding it at each side.

100% recyclable Cortec™ pocket spring unit

The ideal choice in construction when choosing a mattress, pocket sprung mattresses offer, in our opinion, the best combination of support and comfort. The number of pocket springs can be equally important however

Split/zipped comfort grade options to keep both you and your partner sleeping happy

This product is available in multiple firmness grades, better than that however, is that both people sleeping on a mattress can have a completely different experience due to the different firmness ratings in each side. This means when your partner sleeps differently, has a different BMI and different requirements, they can have equal comfort, support and a great nights sleep.

Secured edges with two rows of hand stitching

Secured edges with hand stitching ensures the product is rugged enough to deal with the next 7-8 years of rotating and flipping that will become part of your 1-3 monthly routine. Weak edge support and poor stitching would otherwise cause problems a few years into your purchase.

5-year guarantee as standard

We love a good 5 year guarantee. With 1 year as standard for the vast majority of the mattress industry, 5 years is a pleasant surprise. Remember, the average mattress is typically replaced after a 7 year cycle so being able to have cover for any problems for most of that lifetime is a huge piece of mind benefit that often get's overlooked. Consider also, how much the brand and retailer clearly believe in the product, it is not in their best interests to offer a guarantee on something of poor quality.

Rotate regularly - rotate head to toe once a week for the first three months, then just once a month.

This is a mattress that should be rotated in order to ensure that fillings settle appropriately. Rotating also prevents any dipping.

Pure, natural fillings including Egyptian cotton, wool, mohair and hemp

Egyptian cotton is naturally breathable and help provide a cool, comfortable environment. With more than 80% of the world's population sensitive to humidity, it is imperative to sleep on a bed that will regulate temperature and humidity in the bedroom. The natural fibres in Egyptian cotton also help fight off dust mites and bacteria, helping create a healthier sleeping environment.

Double-sided: cooling and warming sides

This setup allows you to both flip and rotate the mattress allowing you to benefit from twice the surface area of comfort, improve settlement of fillings and increase the longevity of the sleep area on the mattress. Turn over regularly - flip over regularly for the first three months, then just seasonally.

It is import to rotate your mattress because it helps ensure even settlement of fillings and ensure even distribution is maintained. Further to this it also means that more than one area of the mattress is used equally, increasing longevity and lifespan as part of typical mattress care.
