Pros & Cons

Here we collect tests, guides and product reviews so that you can create a picture of what others think about the product. This analysis and review is based on my experience and a decade of industry insight.

  • Independent pocket springs dampen partner movement, noticeably quieter than open-coil designs.
  • Hand tufting with cotton tufts keeps hypo-allergenic fillings stable after weeks of use.
  • The rod-edge metal frame protects perimeter structure, so the whole width feels usable.
  • A striped damask cover gives a smart finish and feels pleasantly smooth to touch.
  • Being dual-sided, it needs regular flipping, awkward when rotating or lifting alone.
  • The striped damask cover can retain warmth, less cooling than hybrid models.
  • The rod-edge metal frame slightly presses at the perimeter if you sit there often.

Why our sleep experts loved it

The Deluxe Buckingham Pocket 1000 Mattress is one of those properly traditional, no-nonsense mattresses that still gets a lot right. I have not tested it in person, and I have not slept on it at home either. Archers being based in Scotland also means I did not have a realistic opportunity to pop in store and give it a proper lie down. So this review is built from the published specification, my experience in the UK mattress industry, and the real world cues I look for when I’m trying to judge whether a mattress is likely to deliver on its promises.

Design and features

The first thing I like here is that it is pocket sprung rather than open coil. In 2026, I have very little patience for open coil mattresses being sold as anything other than entry level, because the support just is not as targeted and the feel tends to be more wobbly and less refined over time. Pocket springs move independently, and that piston style response described in the spec is exactly what you want for more even pressure handling across shoulders, hips, and lower back.

The Buckingham uses 1000 pocket springs, which I’ll be blunt about, that is basically the baseline now, not a luxury flex. But it is also not pretending to be something it isn’t, and if the price sits sensibly, 1000 springs can still do a very respectable job. I also like the inclusion of a rod edge frame around the perimeter. In theory, that should help the mattress hold its shape and give you more usable width. But I’m a bit sceptical of how much “full use of the mattress width” you really get in practice, because edge support is as much about the build quality and upholstery tension as it is about a frame being present.

The striped damask cover gives it that classic British mattress vibe. It is not a performance knit, it is not trying to be trendy, and honestly that suits this product. The hand tufting is another positive. Tufting helps pin the comfort layers in place, which can reduce shifting and lumpiness, especially important when you have softer hypo allergenic fillings that might otherwise migrate with use.

Mattress comfort

From the spec and the positioning, this reads as a medium tension mattress with a fairly traditional feel. You are getting the spring support first, then cushioning from hypo allergenic fillings rather than thick memory foam style sink. That usually translates to a mattress that feels supportive and more “on the bed” than “in the bed”, with gentler contouring rather than a deep hug.

And I’m glad it is dual sided. Dual sided mattresses are simply a better long term proposition in most homes, because flipping spreads the wear through the whole build, not just the top panel. But it does come with a catch. You have to actually flip it. If you know you won’t, be honest with yourself, because a dual sided mattress that never gets flipped is not magically more durable.

Suitability

In my view, this medium tension is best for side sleepers, and it should still work well for back sleepers of average weight who like a balanced feel. Side sleeping is where pockets plus a forgiving comfort layer can really shine, since the shoulder and hip need a bit of give without the whole spine collapsing. If you are a dedicated back sleeper and you like a firmer, flatter surface, you might find this a touch too accommodating, especially over time as the fillings settle.

For heavier sleepers or anyone who runs hot and wants a very taut, highly supportive feel, I would be cautious. Not because pocket springs are wrong, they are right, but because 1000 springs and generic hypo allergenic fillings can only do so much if you need extra reinforcement. You might be better off going firmer or stepping up to a model with a denser comfort build. But for average weight couples wanting a traditional pocket sprung mattress that is not priced into the stratosphere, the Buckingham looks like a sensible choice.

What customers thought

I do not have the full set of customer comments in front of me here, so I can’t quote them line by line, and I won’t invent specifics. What I will say is this. Mattresses built like this tend to attract the same kinds of feedback patterns. People who move from open coil or very basic foam often comment on improved stability, less disturbance when a partner turns, and a more “proper” supportive feel. They also often mention that a tufted, traditional mattress can feel firmer at first and then relax slightly as the fillings settle in. That bedding in period is normal, but it does need managing with rotation and flipping, especially in the first few months.

On the negative side, the most common criticisms for this style are usually about weight and upkeep. Dual sided pocket sprung mattresses can be heavy and awkward to flip, and if you skip that routine, you lose one of the key benefits you paid for. Some customers also expect 1000 springs to feel ultra plush and hotel like. It probably won’t. It should feel supportive, classic, and comfortable, not like a thick topped premium hybrid.

The verdict

I like the Deluxe Buckingham Pocket 1000 Mattress more than I expected to from the name alone. Pocket springs get a big tick from me, and dual sided construction is a genuine durability win if you do your part. The spring count is not exciting, but it is adequate, and for a sensibly priced mattress, you could do a lot worse than a tufted, traditional pocket sprung build with a reinforced edge.

My main scepticism is about expectations. If you want a dramatic, sink in, super plush feel, this is probably not your mattress. If you want a solid, medium tension, traditional pocket sprung mattress that should suit most average weight sleepers, especially those on their side, this looks like a sound buy on paper. I’d still check return policies and delivery terms carefully, because without an in store test or at home trial experience from us, the safest purchase is always the one that gives you a realistic escape route if the feel is not quite right.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

Decent mattress with a supportive feel and not too bouncy, but the delivery took longer than it said and that was a bit annoying.
