Why our sleep experts loved it

The realm of sleep is deeply personal and finding the right mattress that caters to individual preferences and orthopaedic needs is a journey worth investing time in. Bensons for Beds has been a beacon of trust in this sector, offering a plethora of options for discerning buyers. The Pensilva Ortho Mattress is one such offering aimed at delivering a blend of firm support and plush comfort. This review delves into the intricacies of its construction, comfort materials, and other key characteristics that set it apart in the crowded market.

Features and Construction

Material Quality

The hallmark of a good mattress often lies in the quality of materials employed. The Pensilva Ortho Mattress boasts high-grade construction materials (1000 pocket springs) that promise durability and a premium feel. The hypoallergenic fabric cover is a thoughtful addition that caters to the sensitive sleeper, reducing the potential for allergic reactions.

Layer Analysis

Support Core: The heart of the Pensilva Ortho Mattress lies in its robust support core. The individually wrapped pocket springs provide a firm foundation that contours to the body while minimizing motion transfer - a boon for couples.

Comfort Layers: The comfort layers are a blend of memory foam and natural fillings. The memory foam molds to the body, alleviating pressure points, while the natural fillings provide a plush, breathable surface aiding in temperature regulation.

Firmness Level: With a firmness rating falling on the firmer side of the spectrum, this mattress is tailored for those who require additional back support or prefer a solid feel beneath them as they slumber.

Performance Analysis

Support and Comfort: The harmonious blend of a sturdy support core and adaptive comfort layers make the Pensilva Ortho a haven for those seeking a restorative night’s sleep. The firm support aligns the spine, while the plush top layers offer a cushioned cradle for weary bodies.

Temperature Regulation: The natural fillings play a pivotal role in promoting airflow and wicking away moisture, ensuring a cool and dry sleeping environment through the seasons.

Motion Isolation: The pocket spring construction is adept at isolating motion, ensuring undisturbed sleep even with a restless partner.

When pitted against other orthopaedic mattresses in the market, the Pensilva Ortho stands out with its blend of firm support and plush comfort, a combination often sought but not always achieved.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.

It's a firm mattress and is good for my back. I was used to sleeping on a medium foam mattress that gave me back ache. After speaking to a guy in store in Stockport about my back issues he suggested I try this firm 1000 pocket sprung mattress. I purchased it with fingers crossed it'll help me get a good sleep. It took a while to get used to sleeping on a firm mattress and now I'm comfortable and pain free and sleeping well. What I like about this mattress also is it can be flipped over to sleep on the reverse side as well as rotating.

Sale and service very good all round - However, be aware the Pensilva Ortho Firm is very firm. Almost hard for someone who is only 9stone in weight - I have always had firm mattresses but this is definitely the 'firmest' - I am having to exchange for medium as unable to sleep on it as getting tingling in limbs and pressure on arms and hips (side sleeper) . Beautifully made however and delivery was great - let's see how the exchange goes.........

It's so comfortable! I tried every mattress in the shop about 40 times and kept coming back to this one! It has helped with my back issues and made my back pain completely go away with only 2 weeks of having it. So comfortable! Slightly on the firm side but still so lovely. Wouldn't change it, so pleased with this.

We would, and already have, thoroughly recommend Bensons, the divan bed, and the mattress. Compared to more expensive mattresses, this one is much lighter and easier to lift when making up, whilst substantial enough for a good night's sleep. When the time comes we will replace other mattresses with just the same.

Too soon to tell, it's only been one week and to be honest, there is quite a dip in the mattress already. I have rotated the mattress so will see if it dips again. I understand there will be some change but after one week, that seems a bit soon.

A very good quality mattress, however we would class it as very firm rather than firm. It has taken a week or two to feel in any way comfortable. We were told it was equivalent to our old mattress which was classed as a 4.

I am disappointed by the amount of 'settlement ' indentation. Although this was advised, I have never experienced this with any prior firm or orthopaedic mattress. Not really what I was looking for to truthful.

This mattress was bought for the bed in the guest room and has been slept in for three nights so far! It was declared comfortable on those three nights. Beyond that I am unable to comment.
