Why our sleep experts loved it
I have had the pleasure of trialling the Hypnos Bespoke Luxury Mattress for a few hours in my local Furniture Village store and it’s about time to get down to the brass tacks with an honest review. For the avoidance of doubt, this is a high-end pillow top pocket-sprung mattress available in multiple tensions that truly does feel the part. The perennial question, though, is whether it is worth the price and the wait? Let’s see what I found out after spending a lot of time testing it first hand.
Construction & Materials
This is a 30 cm deep pillow top mattress that comes with a 1600 pocket spring unit as the core, comprising 9 turn ReActivePro coils that are wrapped in individual fabric pockets to let them compress independently and provide a better contouring effect. Hypnos then layers natural fibres on top of this, including British wool and cotton, while the outer fabric is an unbleached, naturally fire-resistant cotton cover that has a soft, breathable feel.
The edge support is also reinforced by what Hypnos terms Triple Edge Protection with three rows of hand side stitching which in practice stiffens the perimeter so that you can sit or sleep right by the edge without the roll-off you tend to get on cheaper builds. The pillow top is permanently attached and tufted which is done to add that plush first impression over the solid pocket spring unit underneath.
Firmness & Feel
You can get this in medium and firm tensions or go for a split tension on a larger size. I slept on the firm and would recommend this for the majority of back sleepers and for anyone who prefers a flatter, more controlled feel. It was a touch rigid right out of the box and needed a couple of nights to ease into what I would class as a true firm and not a board-like feeling, with the pillow top smoothing out the pressure at the shoulders and hips. Side sleepers under 70 kg may prefer the medium tension for a little more sink at the shoulder.
The pillow top adds a touch of initial plushness but the real work is done by the pocket spring unit beneath. The transition from top comfort layer to spring core is a clean one, so you do not bottom out when you roll over and turn. Motion transfer is impressively low for a traditional pocket spring mattress and partner disturbance was also minimal in my experience.
Performance & Support
Back support is the star of the show here. The 9 turn coils have a progressive feel, being firmer under weight and lighter on the first contact which helps maintain lumbar alignment without the hammock dip that you often see in cheaper models. On my back the firm tension kept my pelvis level and my lower back supported. Combination sleepers will also like how quickly the surface recovers when you change positions so that movement feels easy and unhindered.
Edge support is genuinely good, with me even able to tie my shoelaces while sitting at the edge without excessive compression. Sleeping right up to the border felt stable and secure. Build quality is excellent throughout, from the even tufting to the straight dense lines of hand-stitching around the sides.
Temperature Regulation
The combination of natural fibres and the breathable cover helps this sleep at a temperate temperature. Wool is particularly good at wicking away moisture and I did not experience heat build-up even during an unseasonably warm period. The pillow top does add an extra layer but because the fills are natural rather than foam heavy, airflow remains decent for a pillow top design.
Practical Features
This is a rotate-only mattress. You do not flip it over, you simply rotate it head to toe, every couple of weeks for the first three months then quarterly thereafter. There are sturdy turning handles, and overall the weight is quite manageable for two adults. Delivery lead times are on the long side for a made to order bed and mine came after several weeks which will be a deal breaker for anyone who needs an immediate replacement.
Who It Suits
Back sleepers who want firm, aligned support with a touch of surface plushness from the pillow top.
Combination sleepers who value quick response and easy movement across the surface.
Hot or neutral sleepers who prefer natural fillings over heat-retentive foams.
Buyers who value longevity , given the extended structural guarantee and the evident build quality.
Who It Does Not Suit
People who dislike pillow tops. I am a long-term avoider of pillow tops across the industry, because I find they are a common failure point for body impressions. Rotation helps, but anyone sensitive to that will probably prefer a non-pillow-top model and adding a separate topper that you can replace independently.
Very light side sleepers who need extra shoulder give. The medium tension will be better in this instance or you might consider a deeper, plusher comfort layer without a fixed pillow top.
Shoppers in a rush. The made-to-order lead time is a real pain if you need a bed quickly.
Strict budget buyers. Even in a sale, this is a premium product.
Price & Value
Pricing is high, firmly in the luxury bracket. There are usually promotions running but even on sale it is a considered purchase. Specification, UK build and finish quality accounts for much of that, and the 20-year structural guarantee does help spread the value out over the longer term. Be realistic about pillow top settlement, which is normal and not usually covered as a fault, and rotate religiously to minimise it.
Final Verdict
The Hypnos Bespoke Luxury Mattress is a beautifully made supportive pocket sprung mattress with natural fibre comfort and impressive edge stability. In a firm tension it is a superb choice for back sleepers who want disciplined support without harsh pressure points. The trade-offs are the premium price tag, the long lead time and the inherent longevity question mark that comes with any fixed pillow top. If you love that cushioned, hotel-like surface and are prepared to rotate regularly, this is an outstanding, traditional-feeling luxury option. If, like me, you are wary of pillow tops over the very long term, take a look at a comparable non-pillow-top model plus a separate topper that you can easily replace down the line.
