Why our sleep experts loved it
Laying on and prodding the Hypnos Bespoke Monarch at Furniture Village left me with a warm feeling and a few questions. There’s a lot to like about this mattress’s craftsmanship and materials, but the price, even after a Black Friday saving, rockets it into rarefied territory. Is this the new face of luxury, or is it serious overkill when you factor in longer term wear and the competition at this level? Let’s dig in to see.
Construction & Materials
The Bespoke Monarch is a pocket spring mattress with a deep, non-removable pillow top. The spring unit is called Hypnos ReActivePro and features up to 10 active turns in each pocket to give a more precise response to bodyweight and movement. In a king size this adds up to 1,800 pocket springs, a sensible, not gimmicky, count. The core unit is wrapped with natural latex and plant-based fibres to give it extra elasticity and help with pressure relief. The sprung pillow top is filled with Red Tractor assured British wool plus natural nettle and cotton, then finished in unbleached cotton damask. Around the perimeter of the mattress, Hypnos adds Triple Edge Protection and four rows of hand side stitching, so the border feels reassuringly rigid when you sit on the edge. Total depth is a substantial 34 cm, so you will need deep-fit sheets.
Firmness & Feel
Available in medium or firm, with dual-tension options in king and super king, the Monarch lets couples compromise without actually compromising. On test, the firm tension felt properly supportive but not board-like, the latex adding a little spring and preventing the pillow top from feeling swampy. The medium starts plush and soothing across shoulders and hips, then the spring unit takes over to prevent your spine from dipping. As with most pillow tops, the first few nights feel extra lofty and then it settles as the fibres relax, which is normal.
Performance & Support
Pressure relief across the shoulder and hip is the highlight here. Side sleeping is comfortable because the pillow top smooths out the feel of the springs, and the latex layer helps distribute weight so you do not hit pressure points. Back sleepers should appreciate the way the ReActivePro unit firms up as you sink in, holding the lumbar area well. Edge support is markedly better than average for a pillow top thanks to the reinforced border, so sitting to dress or sleeping closer to the side feels secure. Motion isolation is good for a spring mattress, though you will still notice partner movement more than on full foam.
Temperature Regulation
The cocktail of wool, cotton and breathable damask does a decent job of keeping the surface from overheating. Latex does not trap heat like memory foam, and the pocket springs allow airflow through the core. I stayed comfortably neutral across the night, even with a heavy duvet. Hot sleepers typically fare better on this type of build than on dense foam.
Practical Features
This is a rotate-only mattress, so there is no heavy flipping. You will still need to rotate regularly to even out settlement in the pillow top. The depth and pillow-top design mean you should expect body impressions over time, which are not considered faults. If you use a slatted base, make sure slats are no more than 7.5 cm apart to support the springs properly. Handles are present and sturdy enough for rotating a 34 cm mattress, though I would still recruit help.
Who It Suits
Side sleepers who like a plush, cushioned top with underlying spring support. The medium is the obvious choice for lighter bodies, while the firm works for heavier sleepers who still want some surface comfort.
Back sleepers who prefer a traditional spring feel with a little bounce and a settled, supportive mid-section.
Couples in king or super king who need different tensions. The dual-tension option is a genuine benefit and not as common as it should be.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
Budget-conscious buyers. Even in sale this sits at a price point where you start bumping up against ultra-luxury brands. The value equation is tough unless you are set on this exact feel and finishing.
Anyone wary of pillow tops. Pillow-top comfort layers settle and can shift subtly with time. That is inherent to a stitched, non-removable topper. If you want easy refresh or replacement, a mattress with a detachable topper, or a non-pillow-top model plus a separate topper, is a safer bet.
Stomach sleepers under average body weight may find the pillow-top loft tips the pelvis fractionally forward on the medium. The firm is better but still cushioned; some will prefer a flatter, non-pillow-top surface.
Final Verdict
Craftsmanship is evident across the Hypnos Bespoke Monarch, from the hand side stitching to the stable edge and breathable natural fillings. Comfort is classic Hypnos, responsive and supportive with a soft landing. The sticking point is the price. Even with a Black Friday discount, you are paying a premium for a permanently attached pillow top that will naturally settle over time, and at this money you are edging into the sort of territory I would reserve for either fully replaceable top layers or more elaborate spring systems. If you love a plush, breathable pillow top, want dual tensions, and do not mind the maintenance of regular rotation, it will cosset you beautifully. If, like me, you weigh value alongside comfort, I would look to equally comfortable non-pillow-top alternatives at a lower price, or a zipped, replaceable-top design that protects your investment in the long run.
