Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Ease of Use

  • Turning handles
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses typically need to be rotated frequently and having turning handles can be massively beneficial, particularly in larger sizes which can become fairly heavy.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

  • Overall Brand Rating

What Makes The Bed Butler PURE Hampton 6000 Pocket Natural Mattress Great?

Wool, silk, and cashmere fibres ensure a comfortable sleep and resilient insulation.

6,000 Pocket springs, which move independently for tailored and responsive support.

Pocket springs are always my default go-to when it comes to recommendations surrounding support systems. See, pocket springs just do it better thanks to their individual and pocketed nature they are able to contour to your body better, reacting to each and every movement your body makes and allowing for full zoned support. Generally perform better than poorer reflex foam and open coil spring units.

Two rows of hand-stitched borders to prevent sagging and increase longevity.

Exclusive design only available at MattressNextDay.

It is common in the mattress industry for retailers to have exclusive products made for them. This means you won't be able to price compare the product elsewhere. The benefit of this is that the retailer is able to control product quality to a better degree. The downside is a lack of price matching reduces competitiveness when it comes to pricing.

Cotton pad helps to regulate temperature.

There are many benefits to cotton in mattresses, including its hypoallergenic properties, its ability to regulate body temperature, and its breathability. Cotton is also a very durable fabric, so it can withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Latex

Latex mattresses will never be latex all the way through, rather, it will be used as a top later. We often find that latex foam, combined with either springs or reflex foam will be combined in order to create the perfect mattress.

Natural Fillings

Pure and natural fillings are typically from animal or plant fibers. These can include: Wool, Cashmere, Hemp or Latex commonly.

Silk

The luxurious natural fibre silk offers enhanced comfort, moisture control and helps to regulate body temperature.  It can reduce heat in the summer and provide warmth in winter.

Wool

Luxury wool, typically found in mattresses in a shredded and felted capacity is an upholstery fibre often used as a top comfort layer, but sometimes found further down in those mattress layers as part of the support structure

Cotton

A cotton mattress cover of fairly good quality and often preferable to damask covers and weaved covers. Your preference will vary though.

Cashmere

28cm deep

28cm of depth is a good amount of room for both a comfort layer and a construction. While higher mattress depth does not always correlate to better quality mattresses, it is normally a fairly good indicator.  With this size of mattress you might require deeper mattress covers.

Firm support

Firm Tension Support Mattresses are suited to those who prefer sleeping on their front and back. Typically sleeping on your back helps ensure the spine remains aligned throughout the night and is the most natural sleeping position that can prevent twisting and turning. A firm mattress ensures that a high level of support contours around your body, alleviating pressure across your entire frame in a more even manner than that of a soft mattress, most notably in the hips, neck and shoulders. Finally, if you are suffering from neck or back pain, a firm mattress can help alleviate these problems and result in a better and more relaxed sleep for many years to come.

6000 Springs

Most commonly is the case with high numbers like this, 4000 to 5000 of these springs will be responsive springs which sit on top of the core support layer of full sized springs to provide additional support and body contouring. There is a point of diminishing returns once you start getting to numbers this high, but it's a great indicator that you are buying the top of the range and highest of quality.

Damask cover

Damask is a fabric, woven in nature that is often used to upholster mattresses. It is typically made from linen or cotton and can typically be woven into delivate detailings required by the supplier. The fabrics are typically fairly hard wearing and should not cause problems

Orthopaedic Support

Do you suffer from back pain? If so you will likely find that an orthopaedic mattress will be massively beneficial to you. Slightly firmer in the comfort side of things but ultimately with a better support layer means that your back and neck will thank you for years to come.

Air Vents

When you sleep you also sweat, when this happens it generally leaks into the mattress. Sounds a little gross but that is the way it works, no drama however as matresses are built to be breathable and air out any moisture buildup, the addition of air vents helps ensure this happens with peak efficiency

No roll together

Specifically designed with roll together prevention in mind. This means the product likely has better quality internals and offers better support than other mattresses in the same price point.

Turning Handles

Have you ever tried rotating or flipping a mattress without handles? You have to do that weird thing where you use your head as a third arm as you sort of nudge it with your face. Take the handles as a blessing

Turnable

You are able to both rotate and flip this mattress. This is going to prolong the life of the mattress as you effectively have twice the surface area to make use of. This means that dipping should be reduced over a prolonged period

Hand Side Stitched

Hand side stitching is a true mark of quality found in the upper-quality segment of mattresses. The process is very labor intensive as it involves attaching the side panel of the mattress to the pocket spring support layer found within a mattress helping to give better edge support and preventing roll-off.

Hand Tufted

A tufted mattress is often a sign of high quality, Unlike quilted mattress which binds the soft layer directly to the other layers, traditional tufting uses several thick straps to hold the layers together through the spring unit, binding it at each side.
