Why our sleep experts loved it
I tested the Hypnos Luxury Firm 1 in store for a good hour to really understand how it responds. It has a suitably luxe look with its hand tufting and neat natural-feel cover. For a primary side sleeper though I found it a touch firm. After a short bedding-in period I began to feel my hips and outer thighs aching which told me that the top comfort layer does not quite have enough sink to relieve pressure in that position. The price point is a good one for a Hypnos and this is one of the brand’s more basic, better value models but the feel will be right for some sleepers and not for others.
Construction & Materials
This is a traditional pocket sprung mattress with Hypnos’s ReActive springs at its heart. Natural British wool, together with recycled eOlus-style fibres, tops the spring unit to add loft and breathability. A soft, chemical-free fabric covers the surface and the whole mattress is hand tufted to keep the layers stable. It is on the slimmer side for a premium mattress and the comfort stack feels quite modest, which is part of the reason it presents as such a firmer, flatter sleep surface.
Firmness & Feel
This is a firm rating and it feels that firm from the outset. Lying on my back I experienced an even, reassuring support through the lower spine and on my front my hips did not dip. On my side though I wanted a little more cushioning at shoulder and hip. The wool top adds a touch of natural softness, but it is not plush enough to create a sinking cradle. If you are lighter than average you will likely find this very firm. If you are heavier than average you may find that you connect more readily with the springs, because there is less foam-like padding to buffer you.
Performance & Support
The support runs consistent across the length of the mattress, with a taut, level feel that maintains posture tidily for both back and front sleeping. It has decent motion isolation for a pocket sprung design, although the firmer surface can still pass a little movement if a partner rolls sharply. Edge stability is good for sitting on the side and for sleeping nearer to the border, helped by the tufting and the overall tension of the build.
Temperature Regulation
The natural fibre mix helps it run pleasantly cool. I never felt stuffy, even on a warmer night and the firmer, less enveloping surface allows air to circulate freely. If you are prone to overheating, that is a positive tick in the box for the Luxury Firm 1.
Practical Features
This is a rotate-only mattress so there is no need to flip it. Regular rotation in the first few months will help it to settle evenly. It comes with handles, which make manoeuvring easier and the finishing is neat for the money. As with most pocket springs a supportive base or slats with sensible spacing will help with longevity. The overall impression is of a basic, well-made Hypnos intended to deliver firm traditional support at a keener price.
Who It Suits
Back and stomach sleepers who prefer a firm, level surface with minimal sink.
Hot sleepers who want breathable, natural comfort without a foam hug.
Value-focused shoppers who want a genuine Hypnos with classic pocket springs but do not need lots of plush padding.
Who It Doesn’t Suit
Primary side sleepers who need deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Lighter bodies that will feel the tension more keenly.
Anyone chasing a cloud-like top or slow-sinking memory foam comfort. If you do choose it and sleep on your side, you might consider adding a quality wool or latex topper for extra cushioning.
Final Verdict
The Hypnos Luxury Firm 1 is a smart, straightforward and cooler-running mattress that offers firm traditional support at a competitive brand price. For me the comfort layer felt a little thin and I developed hip and leg pressure when sleeping on my side, which is why I would steer dedicated side sleepers to a softer, deeper-topped alternative. If you mostly sleep on your back or front and want an affordable way into the Hypnos range then this is a sound, no-nonsense option.
