Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Romantica Adagio Extra Firm mattress recently and it really is a proper old-school, no-nonsense build. It’s made from traditional open coil springs covered with soft white fibres. Running my hand across the Damask cover, it felt smooth and fairly traditional, not thick and plush like some of the newer hybrid styles. The cover is fire resistant and it has reinforced mattress edges for extra durability. Orthopaedic support is provided by the springs and this mattress, at 25cm deep, is double-sided to provide comfort for all your sleeping positions.
The reinforced mattress edge adds a touch of luxury to this traditional mattress, allowing you to use the full width of the mattress without any risk of roll-off. When I sat right on the side to test it, the edge held up better than I expected for an open coil mattress, it didn’t just collapse away under me. That said, it’s still not the same as a proper foam-encased edge you get on some pocket spring models, so if you perch on the side a lot you’ll notice it’s a bit more ‘springy’.
Orthopaedic support provides extra tension for the whole body to help protect against aches and pains. Lying on my back, I felt nicely level through the hips and lower back, it’s the sort of firm that keeps you up on top rather than letting you sink in. On my side though, I could feel the pressure building around the shoulder a bit, so if you’re lighter in weight or you like a bit of give, this extra firm feel could be too much.
Ideally suited to those that are looking for a firmer feel, this mattress is well priced in a typically higher-priced market due to it's extra firmness rating, there aren't many competing products in this space. The trade-off with open coil is you don’t get the same motion isolation as pocket springs, so if you share a bed you’re more likely to feel your partner moving about. For me personally, it’s a good option if you want a very firm, traditional mattress you can flip, but if you’re after a bit of contouring comfort or you sleep on your side most of the night, I’d be looking elsewhere.
