Why our sleep experts loved it
Finding a decent children's mattress, especially for bunk beds, can be a bit of a mission. These mattresses are often a sub-range not given much thought by most of the bigger players in the mattress industry. So it's a welcome change to see Silentnight at the top of the list for this new and practical Silentnight Foam Bunk Mattress.
I got my hands on this one in-store and the first thing I checked was the height, because bunk beds can be fussy with guard rails and headroom. It felt sensibly slim without feeling flimsy, which is exactly what you want for a top bunk.
It comes with practical touches like being anti-allergy, ideal for those who suffer, and this hypoallergenic mattress should sit nicely in any kids bed or bunk bed. Running my hand across the cover it felt smooth and fairly no-nonsense, the sort of thing I'd expect to cope with kids bedding being changed a lot. When I pressed down into the surface, the Miratex foam gave a quick, springy pushback rather than that slow sink you get with memory foam, so it feels more like 'on' the mattress than 'in' it.
On my back, it kept my hips up nicely for a simple foam build, and I could see it working well for younger kids who just need something supportive and easy to live with. Side sleeping is where it can get a bit hit and miss though, if your child is broader in the shoulders or a bit heavier, it can feel a touch firm and you might notice more pressure around the shoulder. And if you're buying for a teen who's close to adult size, I'd be looking at something a bit deeper, this is really aimed at the bunk bed, kids end of the market.
Made in the UK to strict British guidelines, it also features an impressive 5 year guarantee to help instill confidence for those purchasing. The mattresses come rolled up, which helps keep logistics and delivery costs down and helps to ensure that you get a great deal on your investment for your child.
That said, rolled foam does mean you need to give it a proper bit of time to air out and fully settle, I noticed a light 'new foam' smell when I first unwrapped it. It's also a fairly basic design, so if you want things like a cooler cover, proper edge support for kids that sit on the side a lot, or a more premium feel, you'll probably end up spending more. For me personally, as a straightforward bunk mattress that keeps things simple and supportive, it does the job, just be realistic about who it's best for.
