Why our sleep experts loved it
The Horizon Adventurer 1000 Pocket Memory is a budget hybrid: a thousand pocket springs under a layer of bamboo-infused memory foam, with a knitted cover over the lot. That spec normally sits a fair way further up the price list. The foam does the slow, moulding settle you buy a memory mattress for, and the springs underneath do the lifting. The retailer's listing never says how deep that foam layer goes, though. I'd have liked a number.
Medium to firm, and it means it. The sales pitch says firmer than a medium, for extra support, and at least one owner agrees, calling it a nice firm mattress at a really good price. Each spring sits in its own fabric pocket and squashes independently, so your hips get some give while the rest of the surface stays level. If you're light and you sleep on your side, be careful here. There may not be enough weight going into that foam to soften things around the shoulder, and a true medium would treat you better.
Sleep hot? The foam up top will still hug some warmth against you, that's memory foam for you. Mind you, a sprung core is mostly air, and the knitted cover is the stretchy, breathable sort. Expect it to run cooler than a solid foam slab and warmer than a plain sprung bed.
It arrives vacuum-packed in a roll, with three to four hours quoted for it to fill out. Give it a few nights on top of that before judging the feel, since roll-packed foam starts tighter than it ends up. Single-sided, too, so rotation only, no flipping, and the comfort side takes all the wear. Handles are stitched into the border for exactly that job, and the border itself is reinforced, per the spec sheet. Made in the UK, and hypoallergenic with it.
And measure your sheets: at 25cm deep, a standard fitted one only just stretches over. If yours ping off at the corners, that's why.
I'd put it in a spare room without thinking twice, and as an everyday bed it suits anyone who wants the memory foam feel with a sprung core under it. Most doubles at this sort of money are open coil with a thin pad on top, so a thousand pockets plus a memory top is unusual company at the price. The sibling Discovery 2000 doubles the spring count, and the retailer rates it firmer. That's where I'd send anyone finding medium to firm too soft.
