Overview

Today we're looking at the Slumberland Clima Control Latex Pocket 2000 Mattress, a new product from Slumberland that has some fantastic features at an impressive price point. Slumberland has an impressive history, having first founded in 1919 and selling premium mattresses ever since. This latest offering from Slumberland is toward the more premium end and as such has a more premium price point. Don't let that put you off however, the combination of latex and pocket springs of high quantity will both impress and lead to a great night's sleep. Let's dive into the different areas of the mattress and see what we thought.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer sits at the top of the mattress and is where a lot of the softness and comfort is derived. In this instance, we have generous helpings of latex which is a personal favourite. Latex has many of the body moulding properties of memory foam whereby you sink into the mattress and feel cocooned all around, however, it has non of the traditional downsides of memory foam. This means that you won't get too hot with latex relative to memory foam, nor will you experience the strange memory foam odour often associated with mattresses that utilise that comfort layer. The result of all of this is that latex mattresses may be slightly more expensive that memory foam, but the result is a no-compromise better solution.

The Support Layer

The support layer sits at the bottom of the mattress and is known as the "base layer". In this instance, pocket springs of a substantial quantity (2000), reside in this layer, giving more than enough body contouring. Pocket springs are the best base layer money can buy (in my opinion at least) thanks to their unique singular spring that is housed independently in its own "pocket", you get far better freedom of movement that aligns to your body better than competing layers.

The tension of the previously mentioned springs is variable, allowing you to choose between a medium or firm experience. For me, medium is the goldilocks of the pair and offers enough comfort and support to protect the back and suit side sleepers while not detracting in any way. The firm would be recommended for those of a heavier BMI, or those looking for additional back and neck support.

Additional Information

The Clima Control Latex Pocket 2000 stands out thanks to it's fabulous pairing of two giants, the latex comfort layer and the pocket spring base layer are both options I would choose were I picking a mattress today. Additional to this, Slumberland has given a generous 8 year guarantee which is one of the highest you get in the industry and far outperforms many competing brands and retailers. The confidence you can have in guarantees as long as this shows just how much the manufacturer believes in the quality of the product.

Reasons to Buy

Upper segment in quality, yet middle tier on cost is a fantastic proposition for customers.

Guarantee is great and beats out the traditional 7 year lifespan of mattresses before replacement.

Latex is like memory foam but without pitfalls, it's a great option.

Reasons to Avoid

Price point while securing itself into the mid-tier, is still going to alienate those looking to spend less, fortunately there are finance methods that could still help those people secure this quality of mattress.

4 week lead time may put off those that need a mattress sooner rather than later.

Key Performance Indicators

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the wizard above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.
