The Silentnight Ortho Extra Firm Mattress is a new product from the retailer Bensons for Beds that mainly focuses on the mid range price point for consumers with its new mattress. This mattress is designed to provide optimal support and comfort for sleepers that primarily sleep on their stomach or back and would prove particularly useful for those that require an orthopaedic feel in their new mattress.
One of the key features of this product is the Miracoil® 782 springs support system which, while not necessarily my favourite support layer (I prefer the more premium Mirapocket support), does more than a good enough job at supporting your neck and back while you sleep. There’s more benefits too from a firmer tension because, with less sinkage there is less roll together which allows for reduced partner disturbance as you both toss and turn throughout the night.
We’ve seen the Miracoil support layer used in a few different products from the Silentnight brand recently, particularly with this tension and it’s generally well-received from many different types of sleepers with customers having reported that the support layer is comfortable and provides good support for the back, and that they have been sleeping well on the mattress.
There’s a few other nice-to-haves with this support layer also including zoned support where you need it most. This zonal support means the system is designed to provide customised support for different areas of the body, such as the hips, shoulders, and lower back, which can help to alleviate pressure points and improve overall comfort.
Moving onto the support layer and into the comfort layer, this product features generous helpings of natural British wool. This material allows for an all-season nights sleep which helps to control your body temperature and prevent you from getting too hot nor too cold.
Wool is one of the best comfort layers you can get in a mattress for a number of reasons, not least because it is a natural insulator that can help to regulate temperature, while also being hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant, the latter of which which can be beneficial for those with allergies or asthma.
The fun doesn’t stop there though, where normally a mattress has a singular comfort layer, this one takes things a step further with another layer of comfort in the form of Eco Comfort Fibres. These fibres are soft and comfortable but with the added benefit of being made from recycled plastic bottles, helping the environment and your sleep.
The mattress is also hand tufted for added firmness and durability. Hand-tufting is a traditional method of mattress construction that involves securing the layers of the mattress in place with tufts of thread. This creates a more firm and supportive sleeping surface, and it also helps to prevent the fillings from shifting over time.
You are getting a very reasonable product for the price which features more layers and a deeper comfort layer than found in many other products in the range which should prove particularly comfortable for those in need of a firm sleep. At the same time, it’s a design which has prioritised comfort over the support layer, opting instead for Miracoil springs that do not perform as well as pocket springs. I’d have personally put a Mirapocket base in this product and maybe deducted one of the comfort layers for a more balanced and well-rounded approach but still, the 5 year guarantee goes a considerable way toward inspiring confidence in the mattresses durability.
How does it feel?
Firmness of The Silentnight Ortho Extra Firm Mattress depends on bodyweight. Adjust your weight below to get an indication of how it may feel. Remember though that firmness is entirely subjective.
Reasons to Buy
Natural British wool: a really nice touch, not seen too frequently in Silentnight ranges but one that works really well.
Zoned support system: contours to your body fairly well, even if I do prefer Mirapocket springs.
Reasons to Avoid
Firmness level: Most customers may find the mattress too firm for their preferences, this is a specialist product for back and stomach sleepers who need additional support.
Delay in delivery: Some customers have reported issues with delayed delivery of the mattress.
Price: The mattress is on the mid range segment of the industry and might not be attainable for those looking for a budget product.
