We know that the most important thing is to get a good night's sleep. That's why we're looking at the latest in the range from the popular mattress manufacturer Airsprung. New for this year, the Airsprung 1200 Pocket Memory Mattress is set to be an instant hit with 1200 individual pocket springs and a Which? Best Buy endorsement, this is one that is well-reviewed and well-regarded by customers and those in the industry. Made exclusively available to Mattress Online and featuring a wonderfully comfortable and extra-deep 5cm layer of memory foam this is an easy consideration. Let's break down what what's included.

To start, the support layer. It's made of pocket springs and for those that don't know, that puts it up there with the best. Where mattresses in this price bracket typically include open coil and reflex foam varieties, this one comes with the much better and well regarded pocket springs.

Onto the comfort layer and you're getting the well-reviewed and NASA created memory foam. Featuring a hefty 50mm of the stuff, you've got more than enough luxury to sink deep into, keeping you both snug and comforted as you sleep.

Reviews for the Airsprung 1200 Pocket Memory Mattress are generally favourable with people delighted at the comfort, quality and depth of the mattress. Some of the downsides of this mattress that customers report come in the form of tension confusion, with some expecting the firmness of the mattress to be slightly softer than they received.  As it stands, this is a medium to firm rated mattress, making it ideal for those looking for even and balanced feel. Great for back and front sleepers while side sleepers might want to consider a medium tension mattress to allow better sinkage for the shoulder and hips while you sleep.

Reasons to Buy

The Airsprung 1200 Pocket Memory Mattress achieved a Which? Best Buy endorsement in December 2020, scoring highly in terms of durability and breathability. This mattress comes with a generous 5cm layer of memory foam that you are unlikely to find elsewhere at the same price point, same too for the 1200 pocket springs which provide a high levels of sturdy support. Finally, a deeply quilted knitted cover. This mattress will suit those looking for an orthopaedic feel while still remaining soft enough to appease those in need of soft and luxurious quality to aid in their sleep

Reasons to Avoid

Single sided mattresses can be beneficial for many as they are typically cheaper while also saving you the hassle of flipping. That said, they tend to have slightly less longevity as you no longer have the benefit of that secondary sleeping surface.

How does it feel?

Key Performance Indicators KPI question mark

Our Key Performance Indicators are produced using a combination of specification-heavy algoritmic data points and user reviews. For example, a firm pocket spring support layer is more breathable and offers better back support but may prove unsuitable for side sleepers, the reverse is true for a soft-medium tension reflex foam support layer. This is one of 100+ datapoints considered when generating the below ratings.

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

  • Breathability
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

  • Initial Odour
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.
  • Long Standing Odour
  • Certain materials inside different mattresses can produce a small odour. Typically this is short term rather than long standing but there are minor exceptions.

Featuring a wonderfully comfortable and extra-deep 5cm layer of memory foam

Memory foam has properties that adapt shape of your body, immediately recovering its original shape once pressure is no longer applied. It adapts to your movements without sinking, ensuring that pressure is not produced, but without the wrapping feeling which would otherwise cause unnatural posture.

Memory foam provides soothing pressure relief to care for aches and pains

Memory foam is one of the most desirable and in demand comfort layers around, outperforming others when it comes to sheer desire. This foam was first developed with NASA and was first used for commercial applications shortly after. The soft and body moulding properties of this layer makes it very appealing to those looking for a weightless nights sleep. Be aware however that temperature regulation continues to be an issue with this layer, though there has been improvement in recent years with additional cooling solutions offered through select ranges.

1200 individual pocket springs care for your back

Pocket springs are probably the best support layer you can get in a mattress helping to provide measured and even support across your body where you need it most. What's more, the unique feeling of pocket springs hugs each point of your body, offering contouring across each pressure point to relieve aches and pains. Lesser models will frequently include alternatives to pocket springs like open coil traditional springs and reflex foam. Do not be fooled, while pocket springs are often slightly more money than their counterparts, you are typically getting a better spring system and base layer. When it comes to pocket springs and the quality within, the more springs generally the better as the density will increase contouring ever-closer to your body as you sleep.

Pocket springs provide excellent support, exactly where you need it

Pocket springs are of considerable better quality than their poorer traditional open coil counterparts. Put simply, pocket spring contours better and supports better than other base layers. When it comes to pocket spring mattresses, the general rule of thumb is that the more springs the better. There are exceptions, of course, but for the best part this is likely to be a good quality mattress based on it's base layer.

Medium-firm feel, perfect if you prefer plenty of support

A medium firm tension mattress is slightly firmer than your average medium mattress. This is ideal for those who either prefer a little bit more support, or, those that have a slightly higher BMI than average. You may also benefit from a medium firmness mattress where you are suffering from neck/back pain as the additional support can help prevent and alleviate these symptoms.

Wonderfully comfy knitted cover

Hypoallergenic for your peace of mind

Hypoallergenic means that the materials used in the mattress are relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. That's not to say they won't, rather, every care has been made to reduce the risk for those that do suffer from allergies.

A good choice if you suffer from allergies

Single-sided for easier care, no need to turn over

A single sided mattress is typical for the industry and relates to how  a mattress has the comfort layer on one side of the mattress. only This means that the mattress only needs to be rotated rather than flipped. The benefit of single sided mattresses is that they require less upkeep in that there's no flipping, but also, there's less components involved in the creation which saves costs.

Delivered rolled-up - easier to get upstairs and round tricky corners

Rolled mattresses are delivered in a smaller airtight mode of shipping that saves retailers on shipping, storage and logistics costs that mean they can pass the savings onto consumers in the form of lower prices. The result means that you can often get a similarly specification mattress for less in rolled form which is fantastic news for those on a budget. With very little downside and positive experiences across the industry, there's plenty of great reasons to make your next mattress a rolled bed-in-a-box product.

Depth: 29cm

29cm is a fairly good depth for a good quality mattress. Plenty of room for a decent spring system and enough fillings to provide more than enough comfort. While depth is not necessarily a guarantee of quality, it certainly helps.

5 Year Warranty

5 Years of warranty is huge in an industry that typically only gives 1year. This means that both the retailer and the manufacturer both have extremel confidence in this mattresses ability to stand the test of time. After all, daily usage of a mattress racks up a decent allotment of hours, so to offer a warranty of 5 years is astounding and makes this mattress a top pick.

Made in the UK

These are made and manufactured in the UK, meaning that they all meet the same exceptional quality and durability that we expect from genuine UK manufacturing.

Pocket springs

Pocket springs are like natures own springy piece of comfort, except they are not from nature. Alas, pocket springs are a very good part of a mattress and often found in the more premium models. Lower quality products will frequently use open coil spring setups, where pocket springs house each spring in a tiny pocket for additional stability and continued support. Pocket spring typically lasts longer than open coil due to this.

Memory Foam

memory foam is one of the most well known materials used in the upper layer of mattresses. Memory foam basically contours to your entire body with moulding properties. Designed by NASA, this material rebounds to your touch and feels like you are floating on a cloud. Memory foam does not necesserily mean soft either, you can still have firm mattresses for those that want them with a bit of memory foam.

Soft white fibres

White fibres tend to be a mixture of polester and other non-descript synthetic fibres

Knitted Cover

It is common in the industry to have a knitted cover, these covers can come in a variety of patterns but are typically hard wearing and do not present problems for consumers.

This product is unlikely to cause any sort of allergic reaction. Ideal if you suffer from any sort of allergy problems

Pressure Relief

One of the big complaints when settling into a new mattress is that it does not feel as comfortable as they hoped, where this mattress shines is in the enhanced pressure relief that it offers. Each part of your body exerts different amounts of pressure against the mattress and through the use of springs and foams, these products are able to offer significant pressure relief as a result across the entire body.

Rolled up mattresses are ideal for anyone looking at trying to get a mattress up a tight staircase or in a car to bring home from the shops. Do not missunderstand just how troublesome getting a mattress up stairs can be. Heavy and cumbersome, sometimes a rolled up mattress that expands to the side of a full mattress anyway, may be the better option

Medium to Firm

Firmer than the average mattress, a medium to firm mattress is ideally suited to those that are looking for extra back support but still require and amount of comfort from their mattress. Ideally suited for a large range of the populus and becoming much more common, deviating away from the previous medium-for-everyone model.

29cm deep

Most experts recommend a minimum of 4 inches on the top layer and 6 inches for the core so this is ideal at 11/12 inches. Generally, the heavier the load the deeper the mattress should be. This depth covers a wide range of body type sitting comfortably in the most popular section of the scale.

Single sided means only one side is comfy. Positives are you only need to rotate the mattress occassionaly rather than the more cumbersome rotate and flip. Downside is the lifespan of the product may suffer as a result, only marginal, but worth mentioning.

Handcrafted in the UK

Handcrafted in the UK means that the product is built here, by people being paid a fair and honest wage using certified and safe products of good quality and construction. UK manufacturing is some of th best in the world and all of that is reflected in this product

Fire Resistant

Fire resistant does not mean the product will never catch fire, rather, it will not go up in flames quite so quickly. Resistant to fire in the same way that I am resistant to kisses, sooner or later you end up giving in.

Approved by the National Bed Federation

The NBF is one of the most prestigious awarding federations in the industry, helped slightly by the fact that it is one of the only, however, it is still a great source of comfort knowing that this product holds approval by the team

Customer Reviews For The Airsprung 1200 Pocket Memory Mattress

This is a very comfortable mattress for the price. I got a cheaper one for the spare room and you wouldnt want to sleep on it. This mattress is worth paying a little extra for the comfort you receive. It looks expensive and feels expensive. Worth buying.

Difficult to say until I have been using it for a year or more.. lots of mattresses feel good to sleep on the first time, but lose their firmness after continual use for a few years.. if this mattress stays as good as it is now, I will be more than happy!
