Sleep Science in 5 Minutes
You do not need a PhD to help customers - but a confident grasp of the basics instantly builds trust and sets you apart from competitors who simply read specification sheets.
What Customers Need to Know
Most customers have three sleep-related questions, even if they do not ask them directly:
- Am I getting enough sleep? Most adults need 7-9 hours (NHS recommendation). One in three UK adults regularly get fewer than 6.
- Why do I wake up with aches? Usually poor spinal alignment - the mattress is not supporting their body correctly for their sleep position and weight.
- Why do I sleep hot? Their mattress material, bedding, or bedroom temperature is trapping heat. Their body needs to drop 1C to initiate sleep.
The Sleep Cycle (Simplified)
Sleep cycles through four stages every 90 minutes:
- Light sleep (Stages 1-2): Easy to wake, body begins to relax
- Deep sleep (Stage 3): Physical restoration - growth hormone, immune function, tissue repair. This is where mattress support matters most.
- REM sleep (Stage 4): Brain restoration - memory, emotion, creativity. Concentrated in the final hours of sleep.
Why this matters for sales: a customer who wakes frequently never reaches enough deep sleep, regardless of how many hours they spend in bed. A supportive mattress reduces awakenings.
Three Facts That Impress Customers
- Your body temperature drops by 1C to initiate sleep - a cooler bedroom and breathable mattress materials help this process.
- You spend roughly a third of your life in bed - more time than any other single activity. The mattress is the most-used piece of furniture in the home.
- Replacing a mattress over 7 years old improves sleep quality by an average of 62% (Oklahoma State University research).
Advisor Tip: You do not need to lecture customers about sleep science. Use these facts naturally in conversation when they are relevant to the customer's needs.
